Gearing up for the eventual release of iOS 6, Apple has released earlier today a standalone app for discovering, subscribing, and playing podcasts on your iDevice. Simply called Podcasts, the universal app will help streamline the entire podcast experience on your iPhone and iPad. Currently on iOS 5, you you can stream and listen to podcasts right from the iTunes.app, but if any were downloaded for offline listening, you’d have to make your way to the Music.app to access those files. Now with Podcasts, everything is done under one roof. An all-new “innovative” new Top Stations feature lets users find and try new podcasts from a variety of categories, including arts, business, comedy and more.

The boys are back for one last slice...

iTunes Movie Trailers, the app version of Apple’s popular movie trailer website of the same name, has been updated to support the new iPad’s 2048-by-1536 resolution display.

iTunes Move Trailers 1.1 is now designed for the spectacular Retina display on the all new iPad.

Aside from the high-res updates to the movie posters and other assets, the trailers themselves have also been improved. As long as you’re streaming them at “High Definition” (Settings –>Trailers –> Trailer Playback Quality), the trailers look awesome on the new iPad. If you’re watching them on LTE connections though, you may want to be careful and think about bumping down the quality settings a touch. Otherwise, your monthly data quota will be consumed before you can say “damn you movie trailers!”

For the longest time, one of the most frustrating issues with the iPhone was its inability to play anything other than pre-converted MP4 video. Of course, this has changed with the introduction of the iPhone 4 and a number of apps by 3rd party developers have arrived on the platform ever since. That said though, a glaring issue still has been streaming support. I have reviewed AirPlayer (TMA Review) – the only contender I could find some months ago and was appalled by it’s horrible performance, both connected to the TV and not. Boxee for the iPad is now available for public consumption.

Video from you and your friends – all in one place that goes anywhere.

Boxee for iPad brings videos from Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and your computer all onto your ipad so you can find and watch new videos or favorites on the train, in bed, on the couch, on the john, during boring conversation, on the patio, from the roof deck, in an abandoned bunker, on the side of a mountain….

Aside from the fact that Boxee is free to download, you’ll also able to stream movies, tv shows and other video files you have on your computer right onto the iPad (much like Air Video (TMA Review)). You’ll need to sign up for a Boxee account and download the accompanying Boxee Media Manager app for either Windows or Mac for this to work. Once BMM is running on your computer (you’ll have to choose the location you wish to share your media) and the app opened on your iPad, tapping on the “My Media” tab will display your video files to stream. If you’re new to the whole Boxee thing, check out their website and see for yourself what this open source media center platform is all about.
