Another day, another trivia game released with the same old take on things. Or is it? Developer IMAK Creations has released a new trivia title in which there is a twist (the audiences gasps at the news of a twist). The objective is not to select the correct answer to the question asked. That would be too simple and I think it’s been done before, hasn’t it? Anyways, the goal here is to select the answer that is incorrect! Sounds easy right? Not so fast my friend! With multiple topics, a large database of questions that will continue grow and add in some unlockable gameplay modes, That Ain’t It presents a fun yet challenging experience.

thataintit2 thataintit3

Upon starting the app, you must first create your own user profile in one of the six available slots. Once the profile has been set up, you’ll enter the Game Show mode in which your goal is to answer 10 questions to win one million dollars. The wheel of fate will appear and you can touch anywhere on your screen to give that bad boy a spin. Whichever way lady luck works for you, it’ll land on one of eight categories: World, Culture, Media, Sports, Science, Words, US History and Nature.

thataintit4

With the value of the first question being one dollar, you begin your quest to join the ever so exclusive millionaires club by attempting to answer all ten questions correctly. Now with the difficulty increasing as you climb up the ladder of questions, it would be nice if you had some help right? Well today is your lucky day my friend! Built into the game are four lifelines that can be used at your discretion. You can swap out the question for a different one under the same topic, request a 50/50 where the system removes two incorrect answers, choose a whole new category if you don’t like the topic you’ve landed on and last but not least, add an extra 30 seconds onto your timer (that way you can take a little longer if you’re trying to google your answer).

To add more variety to the gameplay, there is also a mode called Speed Trivia, which is unlocked when you win $250,000 in the game show mode. Once available for play, strap on your seatbelts because two minutes will go onto the clock and it’s a trivia battle royale as you have to answer as many questions as possible in the allotted amount of time.

thataintit5

The main downfall to That Ain’t It is that the difficulty is definitely on the harder side of things. To some (aka hardcore trivia fans), they would say that’s a good thing, but for most I could see this as a negative. Luckily you do have those lifelines because you are going to need them.  Also, since this is a trivia game, there isn’t much you can do as far as animations go within the rounds of questions; but if IMAK Creations can find a way to add a rewards system of sorts during the actual gameplay (see Ben Stein: It’s Trivial), it can help spice up the action. Finally, adding a multiplayer challenge mode could make That Ain’t It an even more unique trivia experience, considering how the majority of trivia apps don’t support multiplayer and/or online play.

At the end of the day, it is a trivia game; what separates it from others in the genre though is its unique spin in which you must select the incorrect answer. Add that with all of the features this application has to offer, such as the 999 questions (and counting), 2 game play modes (one unlockable), 2 leader boards, 8 categories and facebook support, That Ain’t It should please fans on the look out for more trivia fun.

America’s favorite dysfunctional family has finally made it to the iDevice. Sorry Homer and company, but we’re talking about the Griffin family! Fox’s wildly popular animated show now has their official Freakin’ Sweet App! You can watch video clips of some of the wildest Family Guy scenes to ever exist, such as Glen Quagmire asking which of Meg’s friends wants to lose their virginity first. Or how about Tricia Takanawa’s special report on sex with a random guy who turns out to be Quagmire? If video clips are not enough, there are plenty of other features that will keep you chuckling along.

App Description

Presenting the official FOX Family Guy iPhone application!

Family Guy, Fox’s Emmy-award winning animated comedy, comes to the iPhone with this freakin’ sweet application.

Watch clips, toss Peter, create a Stewie pin-up, build your own Freakin’ Sweet Video Mix – all in one app!

If you’re a fan of Family Guy or world domination, then this is the app for you!

This app is optimized for WiFi.

familyguy_review3As of right now, there are 25 video clips from some of Family Guy’s funniest scenes. They are broken down into categories such as New Today, Evening News, Freakin’ Family Life, Life of Lois and Everyone Hates Meg. Each section contains 5 video clips which have durations of roughly 45 seconds to a minute. Hopefully with the addition of future updates, this database will grow larger, with Fox Mobile Entertainment including more character clips as well . I mean where is Mayor Adam West, Greased up deaf guy, Ollie Williams & Bruce the performance artist?

Until the additions of more clips being added, there is an alternative feature to keep you busy: Freakin’ Sweet Mixer. You can create your own mix of videos by dragging individual clips into a timeline and share those mixes with others who own the app. Once again, more content needs to be added to maximize the potential of the mixer.

familyguy_review4

familyguy_review5

To sidetrack you from the video options, included in this application is the Stewie Pin up. With interchangeable head shots and body images, you can make a one of a kind image of Stewart Gilligan Griffin himself. Want to shake things up? Take it out on Peter in the Peter Toss. By swiping or shaking your screen, you can toss him around your iDevice while he shout’s out phrases like “Boobies!”, “I’m your daddy” and “Awesome!”

familyguy_review2Overall, this app has tons of potential but currently, it’s certainly lacking content. If weekly or even regular video clips are added with more of our favorite characters, then the sky is the limit. Until then, catch a rerun of the show on FOX or TBS. If you’re a diehard fan of Family Guy, then this app will definitely provide you with some laughs; just be prepared though as you will likely find yourself wanting more after the first 10-15 minutes.

There is nothing like walking onto a casino floor. You can feel the excitement & electricity in the air. The dice tumbling across the craps table, the sound of the ball dropping onto the roulette wheel, the sweet smell of Jean Nate perfume filtering off of the group of 70 year old ladies who are flocked around the slot machines while their husbands puff away on their $2 cigars and stare at the scantily dressed waitresses -all beautiful sights and sounds as you walk to your destination…the blackjack table. What, you don’t like the way Jean Nate smells? You allergic to cigar smoke? Ok fine, here is a new twist to your classic blackjack and it’s called 21 & Fun for your iDevice.

review-games-21andfun-pic5

The game plays as follows. You get one deck of cards and 4 lanes to place your cards. As you draw your cards, you must place them in one of the four lanes in an attempt to total 21. The values of the cards are as shown. Two thru ten are face value with Jacks, Queens and Kings worth a value of 10 apiece. The ever so famous “Ace” can be used as either 1 or 11. With that said, you also have another way of scoring : by that’s by totaling 21 or fewer points using 5 cards. If that’s not enough, you get 2 Wild Jokers which is an instant 21 in whichever lane regardless of what’s already compiled there. When achieving 21 or 5 cards, your lane clears and is open for a new run to begin.

review-games-21andfun-pic4

When dealt your card, you can place your cards in any available lane, but there is an element of strategy given the fact you can’t bust over the total of 21. So, place your cards carefully but don’t take your sweet old time because there is a 2 minute timer for each game. As you play you will see your point meter located on your left side of the screen increase with each 21 you pull off. On the right side of the screen there is what’s called a streak multiplier which goes up when you run on a streak of 21’s.

review-games-21andfun-pic3

To add some twists to the game, there is a so-called ‘mystery lane’ in which a score of 21 will add time to the clock. Each round, it changes. There is also an additional challenge called a pure 21. That is when you get a 21 which consists of an Ace with any face card or a 10. If you get a “pure 21” in each lane it will spell out the word “FUN!” and by doing that, the clock will be locked for the remainder of your current round and will expires when your deck runs out. If you do finish your deck, whatever time remains on your clock carries over to your next round.

review-games-21andfun-pic2

There are 3 modes to play. You have your Play Classic mode which is self explanatory. There is Play Advanced where your lane totals are disabled. And, last but not least, there is the Play Expert mode in which the lane totals and mystery lanes are disabled. Another very cool feature to this game is stats! As you know, I am a stat junkie and for those of you who don’t know this about me: I am a stat junkie! With the stat feature it keeps record of 17 categories! Yes people, 17 statistical categories, a few of which are: games played, best score, longest 21 streak and most 21’s in a round. Factor that in with Local, Country and Worldwide Leaderboards plus the option to share your scores with friends on facebook and it looks like we have a winner!

For those of you who have never experienced riding in a New York City taxi cab, let me tell you. Its like riding on a roller coaster! It’s a wild and wacky adventure where you’re sitting in the back of the cab holding on for dear life as your driver maneuvers in and out of traffic coming ever so close to clipping everything and anything in sight. Get the heck out of the way there Mr. Hot Dog vendor! In TaxiDriver New York, you are the driver and your goal is to pick up your passengers and deliver them to their destination of choice while doing it safely so you can collect your fares.

review-games-taxidriver-td4

When the game starts up you have the option to immediately begin a new game or you can go to “Taxi Driving School” in which you’ll get screenshots to learn the “how-to’s” of the game. The game play itself is rather shallow. You have 3 levels, the first being Central Park. The goal in this game is to pick up your passengers who will be located somewhere on the map delivering him or her to their destination (a green circle) somewhere along the map. Sounds easy enough right? Not so fast my friend! This is New York City remember? Speeding cars, jaywalkers and homeless people pulling rickshaws are everywhere! Well maybe the last part I ripped off of a Seinfeld episode – but jaywalkers aside there are plenty of cars cruising around the city in which you’ll have to avoid on route in order to make your runs and in turn, your fares. If you happen to crash into just one of the cars, its game over!

review-games-taxidriver-td9

So Mr. Tourist wants to get from one end of Central Park to the other, how are we going to get them there? Well, there are actually two ways to control your cab. Upon picking up your fare, you can touch your destination and the taxi will automatically draw out a route that will be shown on screen by a series of white dots which will lead to their drop off point. By doing this though, you must keep in mind that there is traffic everywhere you go so there is a chance that with this predetermined route you might crash into an oncoming car. The one good thing though is if you do select this option you do have the ability to redirect your cab by drawing a new path for your cabbie to avoid any drivers in your path. The other option is to drag your finger over the streets via a route you prefer. By doing so, you can move at your own pace and strategically guide yourself to your place of arrival.

review-games-taxidriver-td1

As far as the depth of the game, there definitely needs to be some updates. There are only 3 levels which start with Central Park. When you reach $300, you unlock the 2nd which is Midtown, and after accomplishing that feat, you can unlock last but not least “The East Side” at $500. That right there is the extent of the game which is why I previously mentioned the word “shallow”. That shouldn’t defer you though. This game does provide a challenge. As you progress further into each level, there are more streets which mean more traffic which presents some difficulty. You also have the ability to earn extra lives by making more money within each level.

review-games-taxidriver-dt7

Overall, it’s a fun pick-up-and-play type of game and at $0.99 you really can’t go wrong. TaxiDrive definitely has potential if there were more maps added in future updates. This game is recommended for fans Flight Control and a definite must have if your dream is to become a Cabbie in the Big Apple!!

review-games-10pin1

10 Pin Shuffle is a beautiful looking game with amazing 3D graphics which brings you not one but two games within one application. You can play the American style bar room shuffleboard in which the goal is to slide your four weights down the shuffleboard table in an attempt to accumulate the most amount of points while not landing in the gutters. The second game play option is what’s called Shuffle Bowling which was created with real 3D pin physics. The twist here is that you’re ‘bowling’ with a puck on a shuffleboard table which makes for unique play. If only it was only that easy to nab 300 points! With that said, let’s delve into each game.

The developer, Digital Smoke really took their time with 10 Pin Shuffle. The level of polish shown in this game is far beyond what any other Shuffleboard app has shown thus far. When starting off with a new Shuffleboard game, you have the option to play against your iDevice or against a friend. When competing with your iDevice, there are four characters to defeat. The first opponent is immediately available and once you defeat that it, the next becomes unlocked. Each gets more difficult to defeat as their skill level increases. Once you select your opponent you next choose the point limit for your game. You can play up to 7, 11, 15 or 21 points. The first player to that amount is declared the winner.

review-games-10pin2

With Shuffle Bowling, you once again have the option of playing versus your iDevice with 4 characters, 3 of which are unlockable. But, you can also play by yourself or against a friend. The rules are exactly the same as regular bowling with the only difference being that instead of in a bowling lane, the game is played on a shuffleboard table. Like I said, it’s a fun and unique twist. Aside from the actual game play, one of my favorite features within the bowling game is that it saves your statistics. It stores your three best games as well as a slew of other stats such as your average score, amount of games played, most strikes in a game and many more! It keeps you coming back to beat your previous scores and records.

review-games-10pin3

As previously mentioned, the polish shown in this game doesn’t only show in the amazing 3D graphics but also in the control scheme. When playing, you can control you puck a couple of different ways. I use my index finger which I place on the puck to move it to the left or the right to align a shot. Once lined up, the puck can either be pulled back then pushed forward or released with a simple forward slide. I highly recommend trying it both ways to see which best suits you. The other option when controlling the direction & aim of your puck is to use the on- screen arrows to “set up” your shot. There you’ll see two arrows on the bottom of the screen that can be ‘swept’ to move your puck to the left or to the right. Above the puck, there are two more arrows which are slightly curved. By swiping them you can set up the angle in which you’re aiming your puck. Once again, I suggest trying both to see which works best for you. The control scheme does take some time getting used to, so you will need to practice different methods to perfect your shot.

review-games-10pin4

A few other things to point out about this app are the sound effects. When crashing your puck into the pins you get an accurate and satisfying sound of pins crashing, however, when missing the pins, crickets “chirp” which leaves you embarassed. The crowd will cheer & jeer depending on how well you do. The sounds can get a bit repetitive after a while but fortunately, the developer gave us the option to listen to our own music while playing. Another good thing about this application is it weights in at only 6.3 MB; because the app is not big, loading times are next to none. Finally, you can also pick up where you left off when you get a phone call.

review-games-10pin5

The $3.99 price tag might scare some people off, but you’re basically paying that price for 2 different games. This app has beautiful graphics, real 3D physics as well as very good replay value. There is a degree of difficulty with the controls but once mastered this app brings a lot to the table. One thing that is missing is Wi-Fi multiplayer ability which would be an excellent addition. When comparing this app to the other “Shuffle” titles out there, that is where this and the other apps stop in comparison.
