Kids’ art is cute, but sometimes you just might get a bit tired of picking up uncapped pentel pens and stumbling on stubbed out crayons. Take your kids to the next level of fun with Griffin’s Crayola ColorStudio HD app, an interactive ‘coloring book’ on the iPad which you can take with you anywhere you go – and a lot less messy, too.

Together with the interactive and animated coloring book sounds is a custom-built digital stylus, aptly named iMarker. By animated, kids will enjoy a moving, musical lively coloring book where images come to life at the swipe of a stylus. Of course, the element of touch input is still there, and the app can distinguish between the iMarker and a child’s finger, letting him or her freely play and explore with drawing, shading and free play.

The ColorStudio HD app comes with a large library complete with a variety of themed environments and playtime activities such as Musical Dot 2 Dot and Color by numbers, which promise to be educational and entertaining at the same time. In addition, you can even design an unlimited number of animated coloring book pages which kids can color in or print from the iPad for actual use with Crayola crayons and markers. These mini works of art can be shared via printing, email, or Facebook.

Expected to arrive Spring 2011, the Crayola ColorStudio HD will sell for $29.99, which includes the iMarker digital stylus (AA batteries included) and the app will be free to download on the App Store.

Remember Sally? She once made waves when Hollywood hottie Megan Fox confessed to the world her addiction to Sally’s ministrations. Whether it’s haircuts or hot stone massages, Sally’s dream of beauty and wellness domination has resonated among casual gamers all over.

In Sally’s Spa HD, you manage a variety of customers and perform a number of services. Pretty much like your standard time management game, tasks revolve around seating customers, keeping them happy while waiting for their turn, performing massages and giving them baths. The goal is to earn a certain amount of money per level which can be used to hire additional staff and buy better equipment. There are a number of power-ups as well — heart, patience and generosity candles to improve the customers’ moods and their tips which run for a limited time.

Sally’s Spa is hugely popular because of its mini-games which are nicely integrated in the main game, offering a bit of a challenge in terms of tasking and a respite from the monotony. The mini-games let you apply hot stones for massages, give facials, choose the right kind of bath bombs to keep your customers happy, give manicures and pedicures, among others. The variety of the mini-games and the punch of color they offer make the game fun and challenging at the same time.

In addition, you do a bit of selling and product management with sales of wellness merchandise. Your success in this department doesn’t affect your performance in the game — good sales do not amount to having more money to purchase upgrades and the like. Then and now, I never quite understood the relationship of this game aspect to overall gameplay.

Just like the graphics, in-game sounds and music could be better, though they’re not bad by any means. In any case, you can play your own music to change things a bit. Controls are good, but slightly buggy when it comes to applying hot stones – sometimes light touches work but there are times when a deliberate press is required.

There are a number of Game Center achievements available, as well as expert scores to be achieved. It should be noted that the degree of difficulty to complete levels is fairly low, so it’s easy to meet targets and beat expert scores.

iPad Screenshot 4

The iPad version of Sally’s Spa is a welcome iteration of the beloved franchise. While graphics wise it’s a bit disappointing since it looks pretty much the same as the original version found on the PC, the iPad version offers an exclusive Best Friends split-screen mode which lets you play simultaneously with a friend. Even better would be an option to play against a friend whether on screen or via Wifi or Bluetooth multiplayer.

Sally’s Spa HD is a port and that’s practically a given. While its entry in the App Store is more low-key than the success of its iPhone version, fans of this time management franchise would find their money well-spent on a tried and tested, but still engaging formula.

While rumors abound that the second generation iPad is already in the works and set for release sometime in the first quarter of 2011, word from various manufacturers in Asia are pointing to the possibility that on top of the anticipated product refresh of the iPad early next year, there might be another iPad in the works. Some have dubbed it, in fact, as the iPad Mini.

While Steve Jobs himself scathingly dismissed the notion of 7-inch tablets (back in October, he publicly said such a screen would be “too small to express the software”), a fresh wave of rumors points to the alleged production of smaller iPads, much like the recent offerings of Android competitors. In particular, a recent Reuters article suggested that Apple is preparing new “iPads” for the coming year.

If true, then a slightly smaller iPad would diversify the current tablet offerings, giving consumers the promise of portability minus the current weight of the iPad, which is considerably light but difficult to hold with one hand for extended periods of time when say, reading an eBook.

Expected in the next generation iPad are front-facing and back cameras in line with Facetime integration across all major Apple devices, better resolution (though retina display just like the iPhone 4 is unlikely), less bulk and a slimmer form factor.

Not sure if that fancy looking resto in SoHo is worth your time and money? Spare yourself the hassle of looking in and walking out with EveryScape Eats!, an interesting new app for the iPhone and iPad which guides its hungry users in the Seattle, San Francisco and SoHo areas.

Eats does it differently by letting you take a virtual tour inside the restaurant, allowing you to ‘walk around’ and explore the interior. If you’re dining on a whim or a budget, there are filters the restaurants by price, location or rating.

The technology behind the app transforms photo stills into 3D, user-cotrolled tours. The social sharing function allows the user to post feedback and comments on the restaurant, invaluable when trading information with friends. In addition, business owners benefit from the new avenue of interaction with their patrons.

Expect more locations to be added in the coming months, and interestingly, a possible update to Google’s Streetview which is reported to be exploring similar terrain. Oh yeah, the apps are Free!

The stylus is long associated with the PDA/tablet devices of the 90s era, back in the day Apple had not yet developed its best selling touch screen devices. With the unprecedented success of the iPad, the stylus is making a comeback, seeking to expand and enhance the input experience on the magical tablet.

Hard Candy Cases is one of the companies joining still fledgling stylus market. The Hard Candy stylus pen seeks to combine style and functionality, offering a stylus on one hand, and an actual pen on the other.

According to the product description on the site:

Hard Candy Cases’ iPad Stylus offers capability and style other iPad Stylus don’t. Slide the cap off of one side to reveal a stylus that is compatible with your iPad, iPod Touch, or iPhone. Flip the Candy Pen around to sign those important business contracts in luxurious style. The iPad Stylus is more than just a writing instrument; it is a masterpiece.

While the pen is on the relatively pricey side, costing $34.95, the sleek finish and the added functionality of a regular pen should make this baby a popular stocking stuffer for iDevice owners.

The iPad Stylus & Pen is available now can be purchased via Amazon.

The Web is abuzz with speculation that the anticipated Friday release of the much awaited update announced by Apple some months back has been delayed by at least a week due to Wifi connectivity issues experienced by testers of the Gold Master 4.2 build (supposedly the final version before the official release).

The equally controversial recent Mac OS X 10.6.5 software update also set the Web on fire amid rumors that the much-awaited AirPrint functionality was pulled out at the last minute. The update was indeed released without AirPrint functionality.

Developers and users of the GM build have reported dropping Wifi connection after a few minutes, a bug that Apple seems intent on fixing before the public release of the update, which should still happen in November, as initially announced by Apple CEO Steve Jobs himself. A newer version of the Gold Master build has been released presumably to address these issues. While the exact date remains a mystery, a reliable source has told The Telegraph that Apple plans to release it on Nov 24th.

iOS 4.2 promises 100+ features, including Game Center, multitasking and a unified inbox for iPad users, features currently being enjoyed by iPhone and iPod Touch users.

Below is a video of YouTube user mackhm showing connectivity issues using the 4.2 build.

Heard the line “This game is great but the d-pad sucks” too many times? A Japanese company offers its handy solution – instead of waiting for developers to figure it out, why not enhance the d-pad with a sticky set of controls on your screen?

Tactile+Plus offers an ingenious solution to your touchscreen woes. A hexagon shape with eight tactile little circles superimposed on the touchscreen d-pad allows you to easily slide around the area, making it easier to move around and pull off some fancy moves. Additional physical ‘buttons’ can be placed where they are needed for other buttons on the screen – reserved for jump, or other special functions.

The verdict is still out on whether this product will work as advertised. If you are willing to try it out, Tactile+Plus is available online for ¥630 ($7.80 US).

Halfbrick Studios, the developers of Age of Zombies, have released a smashing new update for Fruit Ninja on the iPhone and iPad. Arcade Mode is the most intense and exciting addition to Fruit Ninja yet, with 60 seconds on the clock to achieve the highest score possible.

According to Halfbrick, “Arcade Mode adds so much more to the value and satisfaction of Fruit Ninja, while still keeping the simplicity and ease of play as top priority!” That’s not all – slice one of the bonus colored bananas which fly up on screen and get ready for action!

The Double Points banana awards double points for a short period of time. Criticals and combos count too, so rack up those fruit for some massive scores. However, if you’re looking for some serious fruit action, you can count on the Frenzy banana to send a mammoth amount of fruit flying in, but you have to stay focused to slice it all. Slicing up the Freeze banana will cause the entire screen to slow down, allowing for maximum accuracy and combo potential!

The best part is that these bananas can be stacked – you can activate a Freeze, Frenzy and Double Points bonus all at once! On top of that, if you keep the combos going the game speed will increase and you can achieve a massive combo blitz.

At the end of each game, your skills and scores during the 60 seconds will be rated and you will achieve three unique awards, good for a certain number of bonus points each. Check out the new Weekly Leaderboards system, exclusive to the Arcade Mode, where you can instantly compare your scores against those of your online friends.

Arcade Mode is available now worldwide for both Fruit Ninja and Fruit Ninja HD on iPad as a free update. It’s Halfbrick’s way of saying thanks to the millions of fans around the world for their continued support. Fruit Ninja has enjoyed 2.5 million downloads in it’s first six months and stands as one of the most popular iPhone and iPad apps to date.

Fruit Ninja Halfbrick, Fruit Ninja – $0.99

Fruit Ninja HD Halfbrick, Fruit Ninja HD – $4.99

Small World for iPad

Curiouser and curiouser.

Stories of video/computer game obsession are not new, but a news article about a mom in the UK convicted for neglecting her children and let her dogs starve to death for playing Small Worlds obsessively on Facebook stirred up  an even more bizarre controversy – this time involving Days of Wonder’s Small World for iPad, erroneously tagged as the culprit.

The unnamed mother was charged and convicted for three charges of child cruelty and two of animal neglect, and is serving a suspended sentence with 75 hours of unpaid work.

Reports from various publications and online news reports have all borrowed images and descriptions from the Small World website, even after Days of Wonder’s official statement about the matter:

While unable to spend a few minutes fact-checking to learn that their story could not be possibly true (Small World has no online play – the only digital version is the two player Small World for iPad); they were able to search our website to download graphics of the board game and further smear our name.

According to their Facebook page, Small Worlds is “a free, online 3D virtual world with amazing graphics. You can meet friends, adopt a pet, play games, do missions, listen to music, watch videos and so much more!” It’s certainly a far cry from the digital version of the hugely popular board game which requires no internet connection, only an iPad and loads of strategy, to enjoy.

The verdict is still out on whether the UK press will clear the name of Days of Wonder and their popular iPad game which is “not responsible for killing dogs or neglecting children.”
