First came Cooking Mama, a game of cooking themed mini games. Now Cooking Star is the newest kid in the kitchen. Cooking star lets you slice and dice your way to being a star chef. If Cooking Mama left you starving for even more savory meal preparation, then Cooking Star will give you food for thought!

Developer Glu now has a flying game, a cops & robbers game, a Realty business sim and now a cooking game. Cooking Star is a series of 8 mini games that will have you can tilt, touch, tap, flick, and flip delicious looking food dishes. The objective is to master each dish by getting 5 stars and unlocking a challenge dish and also a real recipe.

review-game-cs-pic2 review-game-cs-pic3

Cooking Star’s main screen shows you choices of recipes, challenge modes, settings, today’s recipe, story mode and an about Glu page. Story mode gives you a variety of mouth watering dishes to cook. Dishes included are:

Kebab - touch & turn to cook, shake to add spices
Rice Ball – tilt to roll a rice ball over flour to increase its size
Tofu - Slice tofu into required size blocks
Burger - catch the correct ingredients by tilting your device
Chowder - ‘Stir’ to make the perfect soup
Meatballs - flick meatballs into a cooking pot
Borscht - Tap Tap revolution cooking style

Chowder is the easiest mini game in my opinion, only requiring you to keep an eye on stirring direction and tapping on bad ingredients to fill a green bar in time. It also made me hungry for some chowder soup! The Borscht mini game blatantly uses the popular music game tap tap revolution as a way to make enough borscht before time runs out. Burger is similar to the game Scoops but is not as fun. My least favorite was the rice ball. I found it pretty tricky trying to get the rice ball to even go in the correct direction much less roll over the flour spot. But, Tofu is my favorite mini game. I enjoy ‘slicing’ up cubes of tofu into the required blocks. I would have liked to have seen another similar mini game.

review-game-cs-pic4 review-game-cs-pic5

In Story Mode, you want to get a score higher than 70 to unlock the next level of difficult. Unlock all 5 and you get a total of 6 challenge dishes along with 8 recipes. Touch the Food Basket on the main menu and you get Today’s Special mode. There are 5 dishes for you to prepare every day. If you get the required high score for a dish, you will get a new recipe for a total of 30 recipes.Touch the Oven to enter challenge mode. The dishes are locked at the beginning of Cooking Star but are unlocked in Story mode. Try to break your record with this challenging mini game. Touch the Recipe Box to view your collected recipes for use in a real kitchen. Pretty handy I might say. Touch the fridge to enter settings mode.

The controls are straight forward. I didn’t find it very difficult to master each dish by tilting, touching, swiping the screen, shaking and swiping. I the controls creative especially with the tofu dish. The rice ball dish was a poor use of control design. If you need help, there is also a much needed tutorial.

review-game-cs-pic6

Graphics are very nice, colorful and sharp. I enjoy the animations of the stove, pots, preparation and cooking. It actually made me rather hungry and long to return to my own kitchen. The soundtrack for Cooking Star is pleasant but not intrusive and you can turn off the sound in the settings menu.

What I like about Cooking Star is that it is fun, cozy, colorful and nicely done with mini games. But, there are not enough mini games and the rice ball game and meat ball mini games were just frustrating. If you liked Cooking Mama then you will want to give Cooking Star a try. I’m giving it a tasty Tap It rating.

Role Playing and Massively Multiplayer Online fans have consistently made up a large base of computer and console software sales in the last 10 years. Recently, the iDevice became home to a slew of so called “MMO” games infiltrating the App Store. These applications include iMob, Undead Live, Vampires Live, Dungeon Quest and iQuest. They all have one thing in common;  they are not real MMOs. CozyQuest is the first actual evolving MMORPG that has redefined the MMO genre for the iDevice and one that has arrived not a moment too soon.

CozyQuest’s developer Nils Munch, has crafted the most brilliant interactive universe and community on the iPhone yet. The game is set in the magical world of Eluna, where goblins, dragons, giants and dungeons populate the world.

cozyquest2 cozyquest3

The first thing you will need to do is select a class and race. Your character is a combination of both, so it’s important that you choose the appropriate ones you if you want to possess and use certain powers and weapons. Classes are made up of the following:

  • Priest - uses his/her powers granted by their god to bring good to their followers
  • Merchant - has plentiful skills that come from earning and profiting. They are the only ones who can craft objects and barter
  • Rogue - spends time stealing from NPCs and other players
  • Mage - has an abundant knowledge of spell casting
  • Warrior - highly proficient in war and relies entirely on his or her weapon

cozyquest4The second part of entering the wonderful and ever expanding world of CozyQuest are several features which include going on quests scattered around the world (confined to the world of Felrona for the time being). All characters have weapons and armor they can buy at the blacksmith, in addition to the gear you can loot from monsters.

Completing the quests and stomping monsters raises the character’s experience points (XP). When you have enough XP, you gain a level and two extra character points for which you can use to increase your stats. TMA Tip: increase your endurance stats.

cozyquest5In the soon to be vast growing community of CozyQuest, there are also plenty of different skills to learn. Some characters are schooled in crafting lumber, manufacturing objects, fishing or in the craft of alchemy. Skills can also improve over time as they are utilized, so be sure to make use of them wisely.

Unlike some other MMOs, it is easy and not overwhelming to immerse yourself in the world of CozyQuest. There are no complicated controls; all you need to do is tap and go.

Some very nice and pretty graphics lay within CozyQuest. The backgrounds and monsters are well illustrated by talented artists. The clean interface of the main game screen is populated by colorful and pleasing icons signifying the different parts of the game. A very well designed layout which is currently growing by the day.

cozyquest6What I love about CozyQuest MMORPG is that it is really living up to its name on a continual basis. There is a living and breathing universe inside this pocket sized MMO, which I find to be incredible. There is a chat room for all players called the Salty Siren, newly implemented Guilds and even an auction house where players can buy/sell different items. A delightful new development is one where players have mailboxes that can actually be used to send any item from their inventory (including Gold) to other players.

The only negative aspects I have found thus far is that the quests do get somewhat repetitive and there are currently not enough objects in the game. This of course should be remedied via the constant updates that are planned by Nils.

I am really enjoying the exceptional feeling of community and enjoyable gameplay of the brand new CozyQuest. With its new daily expansions and added quests, you will be hard pressed to find a better MMORPG in the entire App Store. For the first time, players can experience what a truly wonderful world an MMO game can be in a portable gaming device. If you are a fan of MMORPGs or are simply looking at getting into the genre, CozyQuest is highly recommended and not to be missed.

7days-shot-2TMA’s Candy L recently interviewed Antonio of StormBASIC for his brand new game, 7 Days Apocalypse. Candy is a big fan of B-movies & Resident Evil,  so she was excited to speak with Antonio about the impressive and action packed  Zombie game.

Antonio, as the developer for StormBASIC, 7 Days Apocalypse is one of the first 3D game of its kind of the iPhone. The controls remind me of iDracula and the story has a very Resident Evil feel to it. What are your biggest influences in writing the story for the game?

Well, I’m a really big fan of “B” horror films. I don’t know how many times I have seen the film BrainDead with my friends! We wanted make a fun and fast paced action game for the iPhone/iPod Touch, with some of these films ‘clichés’ (ie. Haunted House, Zombies, Dr.Cupper…).
One of our biggest influences for the game was “SmashTV”, a really funny survival game for the Super Nintendo, and of course the “Resident Evil” saga.

Controls! We implemented three different control systems for the game since playability is very important for us. Of course we have a lot of critics because the control configuration is the same as iDracula’s (and other iPhone games, but iDracula is the most well known in the genre).

In the game, the heroine is named Akemi. What is the story behind her character and how long did it take to complete her look for the game?

Moises Rios, the lead artist, wanted to create a really sexy Zombie-Slayer with an oriental look. As comic readers, we were influenced by great artists such as Joe Madureira and Top Cow’s Ballistic. It took us about 1 week to have the final look for Akemi!

I’ve never seen the fantastic behind the shoulder camera angle before in this type of game. How did you make the decision to even include this in 7 Days Apocalypse?

The iPhone/iPod is a machine with incredible graphics potential, why not use it? We had made it clear from the beginning of the project that the game will be full 3D. It’s bad for 2D graphics fans, we know, but it gives a lot of possibilities, such as a fluid animation and of course, this view! One of our team members thought that it would be great to have this camera view (a more personal one) so here we are!

The weapons in 7 Apocalypse are Dual Guns, Chainsaw and my favorite the Plasma Gun. Can we expect more with future updates?

Of course! We’ll add new weapons on following updates. They are a surprise!

Survival mode is very fun to play, but I noticed its only perks are high scores. Will you add more that include power ups besides health and the chainsaw?

We are already working on that! Our first game update (soon) will include more power ups and weapons.

Who is responsible for the great animation in 7 Days Apocalypse?

Again, Moises Rios. He is also a great animator and has worked on 3D films. We also work with external artists.

What updates can we expect for the game in the coming months Antonio? Any multi-player or new characters?

As said before, we are already working on the first update! The planned features for this update that will be released soon are:

VERSION 1.1

  • Online global scores.
  • More weapons and items.
  • Extended missions.
  • Difficulty levels.
  • General fixes.
  • More enemies.

After that, more updates will be released but now I can’t specify about these game updates at the moment; we are evaluating 1,000 possibilities (well, much of them are from the players :)

Is it possible that you could add “Mission Packs” to the game to include more levels infested with Zombies?

Of course, additional levels will come with the future updates of 7 Days Apocalypse. Finally, if the game sells well, a second part with more scenes & complex history will come!

Antonio, I absolutely love the 3D graphics of this game. What Game Engine was used for 7 Days Apocalypse?

Its an in-house game engine called ‘EventHorizon’, which is the next step to our “StormBASIC Platform” game engine (also the one that we used in “Ankagua3D”). I could write a lot of technical data about it, but will be very boring! :)

Is there anything else you would like to add for the sake of our readers?

Yes, please buy the game and leave good reviews at the AppStore!

Seriously, for those who like the game, we have a lot of plans for this, but we are a small company with a very limited budget. So we can’t update much more of 1.1 version if the game doesn’t sell well. This is the case with Ankagua3D; we are almost finished with the 1.2 update, but the revenue for the game thus far has just covered development costs!

And finally for the people who finished the History mode in 7 Days Apocalypse… I promise the expansion missions that will come with 1.1 update will be REALLY difficult to beat!

[End]

Thank you Antonio for the interview! 7 Days Apocalypse is available at the App Store now for $1.99. If you love Zombies and want to shoot some down, there is no reason not to get this game. Go save Dr. Cupper now! ;)

doodlejump1We interrupt this review to bring you the following announcement:

WARNING! Doodle Jump is addictive and will cause you to lose large amounts of your day.

Now back to your regularly scheduled review. Yes, this simple game of trying to make your little green alien jump to the highest platform possible is incredibly intoxicating. For everyone’s well being, I will include the facts and warning signs about Doodle Jump. I do this, so you can determine if yourself or a loved one is a Doodle Jump-aholic

The Facts
I feel it is my duty to inform you, the public, that the people responsible for such an addictive game are developers Lima Sky. Their hidden agenda is unknown but here are the facts before you decide to take the highest jump of your life.

  • Your mission: Jump your alien to the highest platform. If you fall, it’s game over.
  • Springs on platforms cause your alien to go even higher.
  • Brown platforms break, so attempt to avoid those.
  • There are monsters and UFOs in the game your alien must destroy by shooting them.
  • Higher levels include black holes that can suck your alien in so avoid them like the plague.
  • Replay value is the strongest ingredient offered in the game.

doodlejump2Controlling Doodle Jump (Use at your own discretion)

  • Extremely easy. Simply tilt your iDevice to make the alien jump from one platform to the next.
  • Tapping your alien will shoot pellets at the monsters.
  • Strategically using springs will take your alien higher as the platforms begin to move.

Warning Signs of Doodle Jump-aholism

  • The simple “doodle” graphics of the green alien haunts your dreams.
  • You begin to see green platforms for no apparent reason (clearly the game is very potent).
  • You may start to hear the very simple, yet effective sounds of Doodle Jump even when you’re working.
  • The sheer ease with which you are drawn into the game causes sleepless nights in your attempt to master it.
  • When holding a book or an object, you may try to tilt it by recalling what you learned in the game.
  • While watching sporting events on TV, you have flashbacks of the global leader boards and feverish international competitions.

doodlejump3In conclusion of our public service announcement warning for the extremely addictive game, Doodle Jump: I must stress that you have been warned! More and more of the iDevice public are succumbing to Doodle Jump-aholism. It’s possible that resistance is futile. I see green platforms as I write this and must leave now to beat my high score! (Deep sigh) My name is Candy and I am, a Doodle Jump-aholic. I feel no choice but compelled to give this game a “Grab it” rating.

tokitori_preview1Once in awhile a game comes along that is unexpectedly impressive in gameplay, graphics, controls and most importantly, fun factor. Chillingo’s egg-cellent upcoming platform Toki Tori is such a game. Toki Tori’s journey began as a Game Boy Color game back in 2001 that eventually made its way onto the Nintendo Wii via Wii-ware. Now the egg-citingly adorable Toki is set to debut on the iDevice!

Toki Tori is a delightful platform/puzzle game that features the eggy hero Toki, who is trying to rescue his friends from egg entrapment. The game features an egg-normous 70+ levels and is no ordinary platform game. The last time I had so much fun playing a platformer was when I played Super Mario many years ago. Toki Tori is jam packed with well designed levels and challenging puzzles that even experienced players can appreciate.

tokitori_preview2In order to prevent Toki’s pals from becoming scrambled eggs, you have plenty of helpful and cool items to use throughout the levels! They include:

  • Telewarp - Beam me up Scotty…Tap to warp Toki to the destination of your choice
  • Bridge Builder - Tap to build a bridge for little Toki to cross
  • Freez-O-Matic – Cold as ice baby! Put the deep freeze on enemies
  • Brick Switch – Won’t get bricked again… Toki can place brick obstacles behind him
  • Ghost Trap -  Ghost busting! Toki can trap Ghosts
  • Slug Sucker -  Slugs suck… Toki can Vacuum them away
  • Instant Rock -  Toki throws a little pebble & a Rock is born… Reach those higher places he couldn’t before
  • Bubble Suit – Bubble Toki… Now he can float in the deep waters

tokitori_preview3Toki Tori’s clever controls make each level a pleasure to play. When you tap on Toki, you have a cursor which allows you to move him in a variety of different directions. You can also give him a head start on his rescue mission by moving the cursor with your finger to his egg buddies. Toki, will actually follow your directions and accomplish more than one task at a time.

Toki’s graphics and sounds are shaping up to be amongst the best I have seen on the iDevice. When I left Toki standing idle, he started to do a few hilarious animations that included:

  • A cute little dance
  • Waves his hand at you to get your attention
  • Looks around with his binoculars
  • Whips out a map

tokitori_preview4The graphics of the enemies are also incredibly well done and as a result, they really come to life. This game sets an egg-ceptional standard with the amount of sheer effort that has gone into the design so far.

I found the music in my preview copy to be outstanding. It was catchy and did not seem to be repetitive. Toki Tori has a full fledged soundtrack which I enjoyed listening to even when I wasn’t playing the game. I sure hope all 80 levels in the full version will include this.

tokitori_preview5The puzzles, gameplay, graphics, soundtrack and Toki himself are sure to wow a ton of gamers from young to old. He could be egg-actly what platform fans have been waiting for. I predict big things for Chillingo’s Toki Tori on the iPhone, so keep a very close eye out for the little egg-straodinary Toki! He’s coming soon to an egg-store, (Ok, I’m getting a bit carried away here) umm I mean, an APP-store near you!

review-game-sallysspa-ss-pic1Yes, this is the same Sally from Sally’s Salon and she is back with a Spa! Sally’s Spa was a Best Selling casual & Time Management game for the PC/Mac and I can see why! There is a lot packed into this game. Don’t worry if you have already played Sally’s Salon, because Sally’s Spa is even better, baby!

Sally, who is taking it easy after the huge success of her Salon franchise is vacationing with her friend Nell who tells Sally that her neighbors used to run a Spa but retired, and since then her Spa Product shop hasn’t been doing so well. A light bulb goes off in Sally’s business mind and she decides to buy the Spa.

review-game-sallysspa-ss-pic2Sally’s Spa starts off with one location in Laguna Beach, California, but in time will expand across the world. Each Spa franchise has five levels. In order to make each of Sally’s Spas a big success, you have to make sure you tend to the customer’s every need. This is achieved by keeping them happy, maintaining a speedy pace, upgrading items in the Spa, hiring employees and keeping a careful eye on the mood of each customer. As in Sally’s Salon, you have customers such as male models, brides, rich demanding people, moms, athletes, business people, fashionistas and more.

You will have to meet a certain financial goal to progress to the next level and if you go over that goal, you will achieve an Expert Level. You start off with only a few customer chairs, a Blue Sauna Station, 2 Esthetician chairs for facial treatments and one Orange Massage Table. Customers will have boxes over their heads indicating where they want to go – all you do is drag them to the right station.

review-game-sallysspa-ss-pic3You have to pay attention to the customer’s faces when you are giving them facials. Be sure to apply the mask etc when they are smiling to make them happy and you will gain a bonus heart! Also keep watch on their level of hearts that appear over their heads. If the customers run out of hearts, they will leave the spa! You won’t get to Expert Level even with the loss of just one customer.

You will want to make enough cash so you can upgrade! You can buy cool stuff for the Spa like Sauna stations that take half the time and hire employees to help you. Believe me, these employees’ help A LOT, so save up because they are expensive! Eventually the challenges become more difficult and you get a lot more customers.

review-game-sallysspa-ss-pic4The controls for Sally’s Spa are pretty much the same as Sally’s Salon, but with a few differences such as the Hot stones and massage treatments. The simplicity of the drag & tap controls is great. This is a good game for children too. The graphics are much better than Sally’s Salon too! Everything looks very sharp, crisp and is colorful. I like the colors of the Spa’s equipment, the customers themselves and love the animation. A++

I adore the soundtrack because it’s very soothing and is the type of music you would actually find at a real life Spa. Sally’s Spa is not too hard but does give you enough of a challenge. It didn’t frustrate me and the upgrades gave me a motivation to try harder. The addition of Sally’s friend Nell who sells her products is a great enhancement to Sally’s Spa. This will appeal to both genders and all ages.

Some players might find the Sally’s Spa too hectic in later levels but that’s the only negative that I found in the game.

review-game-sallysspa-ss-pic5Sally’s Spa is one of the best time management Games I have played by far. If you love this genre, you are going to really dig Sally’s Spa. It is a lot of fun and has plenty of game content that keeps you busy instead of bored. For those reasons alone, I am giving this game a well deserved Kiss It Rating!

review-game-glyder-glpic1Developer Glu has created Glyder, one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played and I guarantee you will love this game if you have ever wanted to soar above the clouds. I feel the same when playing Glyder as I would fly in past flying dreams. Let’s get ready for take off!

In Glyder, you are Eryn, a girl who has been sucked into a dimensional rift into a world that is not her own. Your objective is to take control of her glider and help her explore the magical surroundings.

  • You will fly above the majestic Rift Valley
  • Dive bomb through the Dark Pinnacle
  • Discover the Lost Kingdom
  • See the wonders of Ambrosia
  • Collect Crystals which open new areas of the game & lands

review-game-glyder-glpic2 Because Eryn has this wonderful Glyder strapped to her back, you can literally do all sorts of fun gliding tricks like power dives and thermally-powered sky high soars. Eryn has to collect as many crystals as she can as she flies over 6 beautiful lands and fulfill missions to earn achievements and unlock a portal home!

review-game-glyder-glpic3 Glyder’s control take a bit of getting used to but aren’t frustrating at all. To start Eryn flying, gently tilt your idevice downward to make her descend from the platform. Tilt your device upward to make her ascend. Easy huh? When she dives too close to the ground or the ocean, a warning indicator will ask you to pull up! Tilt to your left and right to make Eryn fly in either direction. This is good for flying through the caves.

On your left is the speedometer and on your right is the altimeter. Pay careful attention to both because if you crash you will have to restart that level again. Tapping on the small chest in the upper left corner pauses Glyder so you can check your accomplishments.

The graphics of Glyder are splendid with lovely animation and beautiful lands! The game wouldn’t have been so enjoyable if not for the amazing visuals that the graphics give to the player. The soundtrack is a thing of total beauty that lulls you into relaxation! A+++ to Glu for including a perfect, Zen-like music in Glyder.

review-game-glyder-glpic4

Glyder is a great experience because it is so incredibly cool to fly freely over the 6 different worlds! You have to play Glyder in order to really get the true experience of its beauty. Also, I like that you are not flying around without any purpose. You have many missions to accomplish, and many crystals to collect – so there is plenty to keep you busy.

The only thing I didn’t like about Glyder is that missions are short. Even so, I found myself, at times not even caring about the missions or collection crystals because all I wanted to do was glide around the heavens forever…

review-game-glyder-glpic5People, who love flying games and good quality games in general, are really in for a treat with Glyder. There is no violence or blood but there is a plentiful sense of freedom in a magical world without boundaries. I have to give Glyder the highest rating of Kiss It.

Please note that Glu games are on sale currently, so grab Glyder for $0.99!!

iquest1I bought iQuest from Better Day Wireless then I first laid my eyes on it in the iTunes App Store. It is a real Fantasy MMO (Massively Multi-player Online) with Role playing elements in it! iQuest is a much more serious MMO in my eyes than the dime a dozen iMafia & iMob. It is a refreshing  and intelligent app and the first MMO of its kind in the app store. It looks pretty grandiose, so let’s see if it lives up to expectations.

iQuest’s fantasy storyline revolves around the Kingdom of Noth  which was horribly attacked by monsters. The King died fighting the evil beasts that filled the countryside and  anyone who wants to claim the throne has to prove themselves worthy to be the greatest hero. Of course everyone and every being is breaking their collective necks and weapons (plus magic) to claim the throne as their own.

iquest2In order to get to the coveted throne, these would be heroes have to complete quests to earn gold, experience and handy items. Purchasing land also gives them an advantage. Lastly, physical might comes into play. If they can win their battles in the arena as well, then they will rightfully claim the throne of Noth as their own! Pretty exciting stuff, wouldn’t you agree? I know this made me want to strive to be my best to make it to the Royal list. I knew it wouldn’t be easy.

As you can see from the screenshots, the graphics are very nicely done. Although not as beautiful as Vampires Live, they are still very fitting for this game.

When I started iQuest for the first time, I felt like I was playing the RPG game The Quest because I could choose which Race  and Class I wanted to be, and the fighting skill I would focus on. It’s more detailed than I thought it would be and I decided to be an Elf with Knight Skills. The Races you can choose from are: Human, Dwarf, Elf, Gnome (I’m not kidding!), Orc and Fairy (No Hobbits?); and you can select from the following skill sets: Priest, Warrior, Thief, Knight, Ranger and Wizard.

iquest3I really like the home screen because a graphical map depicting services is used instead of a drab menu. I think is a clever feature of iQuest that separates Better Day Wireless from the rest of the MMO developers. After finishing quests, you will find different weapons, armor and magic potions that you can buy with your gold. One of my favorite parts in iQuest is The Arena, where you fight other creatures and people who are trying to get more gold and level up so they can get to the Noth throne!

Other places you can go are:

  • The Castle - find out your Royalty Standing, Your Champion Status and how wealthy you are.
  • The Blacksmith – buy Weaponry and Armor. Spend your Gold wisely!
  • The Merchant House – buy property so you can earn an hourly income even while you are logged off.
  • The Church – for healing yourself after all those battles in the arena.
  • The Tavern – where you choose a Quest.
  • The Magic Shop -  buy potions, along with other items to replenish your health and energy, giving you a better chance to ascend the throne of Noth!

iquest4 The iQuest control scheme is very simple: you just tap your way around. It has no friend codes that other current MMO’s like iMafia have and currently you cannot buy “points”, so no one has an unfair advantage except those who may take advantage of a bugs they might find. Also, iQuest is very appealing to me because I am into fantasy and I really can see the effort put into this MMO which blends the elements of the fantatsic and RPGs very well. Better Day Wireless has so far done a splendid job communicating with players about future updates in the TouchArcade.com iQuest thread.

What I didn’t particularly like about iQuest is that you’re not able to chat with other players or to view their profiles. Also there is no sound at all in the app, which is a shame as nicely programmed music could add to the overall experience. Finally as a female player, I am forced to be “King CandyCane” instead of ‘Queen’, but these issues are known by the developers who are planning to address them with future updates.

The developers of iQuest, Better Day Wireless, has come up with a way to give everyone an opportunity to not only be Royalty such as a Baron, Viscount, and Prince, but the top position of King! Fantasy MMO fans should RUN to the app store to buy iQuest and I am giving iQuest a Royal ‘Grab It’ rating.

7days-shot-2We’ve got 4 minutes to save the world! Oops, that’s from the Madonna song…ahem. We’ve got 7 days, exactly 7 days to save the entire human species from turning into zombies! Can we do it? Yes we can! From the makers of Ankagua3D, StormBASIC now tackles the survival horror genre with ’7 Days Apocalypse’, which should arrive at the App Store next week.

7 days apocalypse is about an unknown virus, called “S-Virus” that is killing and turning millions of people into Zombies! The world has hope though, because Dr. Cupper has found a possible antidote to the zombie inducing virus. You play the female heroine Akemi whose mission, is to protect the Dr. while she develops an antidote to contain and stop the S-virus. Alice from Resident Evil has nothing on 7 day’s akemi! She kicks Zombie ass and asks questions later!

7days-menu-optionsThe zombie packed game features:

  • Intense 3D action
  • Different Weapons: Guns, Plasma and Chainsaws.
  • History mode.
  • Survival mode.
  • Different 3D game view: Back camera and Perspective.
  • Amazing 3D graphics & animations.
  • Auto save feature. You can leave the game and continue after at the same point!

WEAPONS include Guns, Chainsaw and a rockin’ Plasma gun that takes out most Zombies with one hit! Oh yeah!

7days-shot-3-survival-back-cameraAlso the upcoming game 7 days apocalypse will include game features such as SURVIVAL MODE and HISTORY MODE. Survival mode, is just that…keep Akemi alive as long as you can against the insane blood thirsty Zombies who will get more deadly the longer you play! History Mode has 7 levels, one for each day where you have a pre-set mission that you must complete before continuing to the next day.

This action filled game from StormBASIC, which is reminiscent of the Resident Evil movies and games should be out in the app store next week. Get ready to save the world because 7 days is not a lot of time! ;)

bassfishingmania1Bass Fishing Mania is another Fishing Sim from Player One Sports, which gave me a good indication this would be good for Fishing fans! I don’t fish in real life, 1993 was the last time I really went fishing with my then father-in-law and I only caught tiny little fish. He told my sister and I to throw the little guys back in the water. I wanted to catch bigger fish without the stinky smell and little did I know years later I could relive the fishing experience via technology.

Bass Fishing Mania has a couple modes of play. Free Form & Competition. Free Form mode is good when you are on the bus, train or waiting in line somewhere. You can use your boat and go to any of the locations on Lake Horizon to fish for bass. Competition Mode is great for fishing enthusiasts who want to compete with 32 other people for 4 days. That’s quite a work out so you have to really be familiar with the controls of Bass Fishing Mania.

bassfishingmania2The first thing you have to do is learn how to actually hook a fish by casting your line out either by touching the icon on your iDevice screen or flick your device away from you. I found that to be very easy and I got it on my first try. Also your rod is not glued to the same spot like in some fishing games! You simply tilt your device in any direction you wish. Now you have to reel in your line, that is achieved by placing you finger on the reel icon and then you move it clockwise in circles. Again the control was easy as pie. You won’t just “automatically” catch a fish after 15 seconds or so, which lends to the realism of this game.

Once you get a bite from a fish, you have to literally fight the bass so you weaken it in order to catch it. You may be used to the very easy method in some fishing sims where all you have to do is reel it in with the reel control with not that much effort at all. Bass Fishing Mania is not like that, oh no. In Real life you have to struggle with fish and in this game you have to tilt your device according to the arrows on the screen, so your bass won’t get away!

bassfishingmania3 bassfishingmania4

To start fishing, you will see an overhead screen with the Lake, my boat and different flashing red icons indicating different fishing spots you can catch bass at. To reach these spots just tap on the red circles and your boat will start to move towards them. After struggling (even with the small fries) with catching some little fishes and practicing, I wanted to move on to competition mode!

Competition Mode is where you participate in 3 different tournaments. If you progress you will get prize money to upgrade your equipment. The Levels comprise of Amateur Basic, Super Bass Series and King of the Lake Special. You have to finish in the top 50% to progress each day and only your best 3 fish will count! I was pretty proud of myself that I placed first and won $90. Another tip is to sell your old equipment at the Tackle Shop that you don’t need any more. Over all, both modes of play were slightly tiring but enjoyable.

bassfishingmania5The graphics of Bass Fishing Mania are pretty good, not as good as Flick Fishing and it would have been to nice to have seen more realistic water. The scenery was pleasant and the game sounds were pretty realistic. The fish themselves were lively and animated pretty well.

The controls although simple, do require you to put some effort into moving your iDevice to catch bass. I quite like this idea and I am glad Player One Ltd. included this difficulty in the game.

bassfishingmania6 bassfishingmania7

The game is a solid fishing simulation and felt realistic with the way you have to tilt your iDevice. I like the casual mode that anyone can use in some down time and the Competition mode is great if you want to be the Champion Fisher.

What I didn’t like about the game is that it has no Aquarium where you can go back and see the types of fish that you caught. Also the graphics could have been more realistic and colorful.

I recommend Bass Fishing Mania for anyone who loves Fishing games because I know you will enjoy it’s very involving gameplay and controls. It even has a Tackle Shop, how can you not love that? I am giving it a solid Tap It Rating.

flipdisk1I was pretty excited to get to review a new puzzle game named Flip Disc from Chillingo, after all they brought us The Quest and iDracula, among other quality games. The concept of the game is very simple, rotate the five discs and form a line of the same color of different colored gems that are constantly flowing from the outermost disc first to the center. If you form 10 lines, you move on the next level. Sound easy enough? Let’s see…

Flip Disc has a simple clean menu and gets bonus points for a challenge that’s for sure. Rotating the layers of the circle discs so all the gems of the same color form a line is not as easy as it sounds. Every identical colored line you form gives you 10 points. If you get more than one line with only one rotation, you get a nice score boost. You move up a level for every 10 lines you complete. Upon finishing you will be known as Flip Disc Master and get an award.

flipdisk3

There are five special gems in Flip disc which can be used to form lines with the other four gems. Once again, you must make sure the gems are all the same color. Only one special gem per line is allowed. The Five Special Gems along with their abilities are:

  • Mega Score [Score Boost]
  • Time Stopper [Stops New Gems from Coming]
  • Blocker [Blocks off for a few seconds the Disc where Gem is on]
  • Explosive [All Gems on the same disc are decimated]
  • One Gem that you will want to stay clear of is the Black Gem which is the Evil gem

flipdisk2The controls I found a bit cumbersome, they consist of the first left arrow button which changes the layers of the wheel by rotating the Disc clockwise. The right arrow button does the same but counterclockwise. The next set of arrow buttons is the left one pointing up, which selects an outermost disc and the right button pointing down, which selects an innermost disc. I would have preferred manual tapping rather than these four sets of buttons.

At the bottom is a bar that goes from green (when you are safe) into red (danger), where you will lose the game. You will also hear a rather loud alarm go off if you don’t happen to notice your bar has approached the danger zone. The “Next” button, tells you what colored gem is coming up and you can also force a new colored gem to be produced by tapping it.

As a side note, Flip Disc actually has an exit button which a lot of apps do not have. If you have to exit a game usually, you would use the home or top button on your iDevice, so kudos to Chillingo for including that option.

The graphics are surprisingly subdued for this puzzler but are adequate enough. I would have preferred a much more lively wheel of discs instead of being rather tiny on the screen. The music although rather plain wasn’t annoying and kind of lent to the hectic pace of Flip Disc.

flipdisk4What I liked about Flip Disc is that it’s a real challenge of a puzzle game. It’s a quick paced game and is definitely not easy starting off. The instructions were very good and do a good job of explaining the objective of the game. It kept me busy, it kept my attention.

What I didn’t like about the game was that there was no “flipping” at all in the game. The controls I felt were not necessarily the best design. I feel that Flip Disc would have been better served with tapping on the discs or moving them rather than saddled with pushing four sets of buttons.

Puzzle gamers will want to get Flip Disc for its different game play and challenging progressive difficulty. I have to subtract points for only fair game controls, so Flip Disc gets a Tap It rating from me.

ottomatic1When I was a little girl, my mother fueled my interest in old B&W science fiction movies that weren’t very good at all. They were entertaining though and many laughable. These types of movies are commonly known as “B-Movies” and many a Saturday I spent watching them totally transfixed. I would also freak out over movies like “My husband is a monster from outer space” or “Giant Brains” which threatened to take over the world. As I got older, watching giant spiders made me shudder but also laugh at the same time at the terrible special effects. I grew to really enjoy these bad B-movies, so if you are a sci-fi aficionado, you’ll want to give Otto Matic: Alien Invasion a very close look.

Brian Greenstone, the president of Pangea Software was influenced by sci-fi movies of the 50’s & 60’s, like The Day The Earth Stood Still (Recently remade with Keanu Reeves) and the classic Plan Nine From Outer Space. These were all movies I relished as a child. I think it’s very clever that Greenstone used his influences from these old movies to create an adventure game called Otto Matic.

ottomatic2In the game the year is far back in the past, 1957 to be exact and flying saucers from Planet X have invaded earth to abduct humans. This is a plot of the evil Brain Aliens (gasp!) who are whisking the humans away to strange planets so they can be slaves of the Giant Brain. Not a very pleasant scenario for us humans eh?

You play the role of Otto Matic, a robot who is designated to save Earth from the clutches of those wicked Brain Aliens. Otto Matic’s spaceship takes him first to earth to save as many helpless humans as he can, then it’s off to 9 other planets to hopefully defeat the Giant Brain once and for awhile. The defeat means peace will return to the galaxy and you will drop the humans back on earth where they will go back to living a normal (probably strange) life again!

ottomatic3Otto Matic has 10 levels which are really 10 planets, filled with all sorts of wacky aliens and creatures. If you want to save all the humans you can, you will need to know how the controls work. The controls for Otto Matic were awkward at times. They actually made it frustrating for me to play the game. The first thing you will notice is the big quirky D-pad. There are buttons on the right. The hand icon is for Otto Matic to punch enemies and also pick up important items like a stun gun, flame gun and orbs. When you first start on Planet Earth, you will see these different colored orbs, Red, Yellow and Blue. Picking up these orbs will affect Otto Matic in different ways. The bottom button is for his jet set. The top one is for Otto to store his items or to take them out again. Finally, the one on the right is Otto’s trusty fire button.

ottomatic4The Graphics are stunning in Otto Matic. They can be used to show off your iDevice for they are that good. Very colorful, the humans look right out of 1957, the Aliens and strange creatures are very fittingly bizarre. The soundtrack fits perfectly with this B-movie parody.

What I really liked about Otto Matic was the amazing graphics first and foremost. Brilliant detail and very creative sci-fi influences. Having 10 planets to explore is a good amount of game time. Each level is very different and holds new surprises. It is by no means an easy game.

ottomatic5What I didn’t like about Otto Matic is the quirky D-pad control. Even so, I still found Otto Matic to be a pretty good adventure game in general. Others I am sure might find the D-pad controls perfectly fine. One tip, turn OFF the Smooth Cam in settings to make it easier to control him. I found turning it off improved control a tiny bit.

Playing Otto Matic brought back great memories of old B-movies and I wanted to feel like I was in one of those movies. The game in certain parts did make me feel like I was in an old science fiction movie, especially with that soundtrack! Brian Greenstone should be proud of himself for creating such a different and unique game. The controls however put a slight damper on the movie like experience, so that’s why I’m only giving it a Tap It Rating.
