Viber now supports Group Messaging, improved sound quality

Perhaps the most popular (and fastest growing) alternative to Skype, Viber now has 90 million users worldwide and just been updated today to v2.2 for iOS. For the uninitiated, Viber lets its users call and text each other all for free – so long as the app has been installed on their mobile device. With the most recent update, Viber brings group messaging, along with time stamps to all messages sent/received to masses (something Whatsapp users have gotten accustomed to). More importantly for its VoIP functionality, a new voice engine has been implemented for improved sound quality.

From my brief tests, the calls did sound markedly improved, even if it did seem a bit like it was made from an empty hall. Shaky voice quality was the main reason why I’d previously stopped using the app on a daily basis; maybe the new and improved engine will bring me back as a user full time.

Other new additions include the ability to assign backgrounds to a conversation, see who joined Viber recently via the contacts screen, and the inclusion of photos to contacts lists. If you’re still looking for ways to make free calls on your iPhone to family and friends in another city/country, Viber is certainly worth checking out. And for those of you who already use the app, you can now grab the update via the App Store.
