Rovio releases Angry Birds Space teaser, launch date set for March 22nd

Houston, we have liftoff. Angry Birds, the uber-lucrative gaming property for Rovio (it’s been downloaded over 700 million times across various mobile platforms), will soon be embarking on a journey that’ll take the beloved cast into outer space. From Rovio’s blog:

Angry Birds Space is a completely new game with innovative new gameplay, but with some of the familiar Angry Birds elements that fans already know and love — plus some surprises!

According to Yahoo! Games, Rovio has teamed up with NASA and National Geographic to be their ‘launch partners’ when the game officially releases on March 22nd. With the fourth major installment in the franchise (the last being Angry Birds Rio), Space will let fans sling birds on completely new planets, where there’ll be new gameplay elements like zero gravity, slow-motion trajections, and “lightspeed” destruction. And as part of a coordinated launch effort, Rovio will be simultaneously releasing the mobile game along with other Angry Birds Space offerings in animation, retail and publishing. More details on the game will be unveiled in early March, but in the meantime, you can check out the teaser website and watch the brief trailer below.

Not that this doesn’t sound cool, but is Rovio ever going to do anything besides Angry Birds?  Before this mega hit they were actually creative and had some cool but under-appreciated games out.  Now it seems like they’ve become Microsoft and decided to rest on their laurels.  And much like Apple with their iPhone, it’s not like they even came up with the concept of Angry Birds anyway.  They just took existing game play one step further to make it mass marketable.  It’s time for something new, Rovio.
