Evernote iOS update: Smart titles, Improved Editing and more

Evernote, the notetaking tool I heavily rely on for storing all my work/personal notes, ideas and pretty much everything I come across on the web, has been updated for the iPhone and iPad. Version 4.1.8 brings about “smarter” titles, easier sharing (new sharing icon), improved editing on iOS 5 (faster and better style preservation from copy/paste) and other minor improvements. For many of you who can’t stand having all those notes with “Untitled Notes” – when a note is created without entering a proper title – the Predictive note titles feature should be a welcomed addition:

Gone are the days of Untitled Notes. Now, when you create a new note and save it without giving the note a title, the app will assign a contextual title using calendar events, your location, note contents, and other information. You’ll see our predictive title as soon as you create the note. If you would prefer to change the title, just tap into the title area and start typing. As a result of this new feature, all of your new notes will have an informative title.

So if you create a note with an audio attachment, its title will automatically be filled in with “Audio” should you leave the title area blank, instead of the not-so-friendly Untitled Notes. Basically, the predictive aspect of this new feature will give names to your notes like “Note” (for just text), “Snapshot” (image taken), “Camera Roll” (image used from library) and so on. What I haven’t seen so far though is the contextual title actually using any of my note contents – they’re simply named “Note” after several test tries. Perhaps I’m missing completely obvious. Regardless, it’s a good start compared to the previous method of blanketing all notes with the same title.
