Angry Business Man in Review – A Case Of Simpler Is Better
I’m beginning to feel like a broken record, but the reality is that a game in the App Store these days has to stand out to have any chance at success. Luckily, Angry Business Man is a very different sort of constant running game. The premise is simple: the bus failed to stop and pick you up, so now you have to catch it. The game handles the running for you, and the only obstacle to worry about are randomly placed traffic cones that you jump by tapping on the screen. There are two things that make Angry Business Man a bit different game play wise. The first is that the landscape is 360 degrees. Yes, you might not want to play with headphones on, because you’ll often find yourself rotating your device such that headphones will simply get tangled.
The second concept is that you must keep the Man on the screen at all times. If you tilt the device to the left he slows down, and to the right he speeds up. Between tilting and rotating, it’s often hard to know which way is “up” (again the reason for not wearing your headphones). This interesting control scheme certainly separates Angry Business Man from the crowd. It takes a bit to get used to, but makes for a rather interesting experience. The game is OpenFeint enabled, but that just gives you leaderboards. There are no achievements in this game. Still, it’s fun just to try and continually beat your old high score.
The aesthetics in Angry Business Man are charmingly minimalistic. The graphics are black and white except for the orange street cones, and the landscape is basically a randomly generated black blob. However, the bus full of passengers at the beginning looks great, and the businessman is both wonderfully drawn and nicely animated. I love the papers that are constantly flying out of his briefcase as he runs.
Sound effects are mostly limited to the pitter patter of the businessman’s feet as he runs, though there is a smattering of applause when you successfully jump something or reach a certain milestone. There’s also a really annoyed “oww” when you trip over a cone or fall off the screen. Unfortunately there is no music to accompany your antics, but it almost doesn’t need it (I’d still like some, though).
If you think you’ve seen it all when it comes to “infinite running” games, then you really need to give Angry Business Man a try [Free Version]. There’s something about it’s simplicity that actually helps it rise above the crowd. The concept of actually controlling the runner’s speed doesn’t hurt, either. The visuals are basic but great, and every time you hear the man go “oww” you’ll want to get up and avenge his fall. This is definitely one to add to your infinitely growing collection of running games.
