Lots of People Have Cooties but the Game Devs Haven’t Seen Much Revenue

Washington, District Of Columbia – The Cooties epidemic has spread to iPhones all over the world, but the indie developers from ImaginaryFeet haven’t seen much revenue. So, after a positive initial response to the game’s launch in April, indie developers Emil Anticevic and Tom McLeod are redesigning levels, adding new features, and trading in their original pricing strategy for a tiered in-app purchase system. The newest update brings the game down to less than 20 mgs and boasts two new in-app purchases.

Cooties has been highlighted and reviewed positively by both bloggers and loyal players. Despite the good reviews, Cooties has not seen the paid download numbers the developers were expecting based on past experience. Every time Cooties drops to free, it downloads like crazy. But once the game goes back to $.99, people treat it like, well… like it’s got cooties.

“It’s pretty standard to see downloads spike when you drop an app or a game to free,” says Emil. “However, our other apps such as Frametastic sustained an increase in sales when it returns to full-price. For Cooties we see way more free downloads, but less of that sustained sales effect.”

After brainstorming monetization strategies, the team created two in-app purchases. Geared to facilitate the proven method of attracting consumers with a free download, the developers hope this tactic will generate revenue on in-game items. The difference this time is the allure of purchasing extra powerups that make the game easier, and unlocking additional level packs. To kick it off, OpenFeint will feature Cooties as a FGOTD when it drops to free on July 24th.

The first in-app purchase allows you to unlock the Swamp Water level pack while the other arms you with 100 Ability Points (APs) used to redeem in-game abilities. These features don’t affect playability as each boost can only be used once per level and isn’t designed to solely elevate your score. For the dedicated gamer, you can reach the Swamp Water level pack by collecting 25 stars instead of paying for it.

Emil reflected on the initial response to Cooties, “We received lots of feedback that [Cooties] was very hard. Instead of making the game too easy, we decided to add variety to the gameplay through abilities. A good player will still beat a mid-level player who uses ability powers, so it maintains the competitive spirit while making the game a bit easier for casual players.”

Emil and Tom created these brand new abilities to add a fresh aspect and keep players engaged. In further catering to gamer suggestions, the team has been re-engineering levels and will release that major update by August.
