Yokohama, Japan – Nagaraja Rivers today is pleased to announce an updated release of Reading Thai 1.2, the first app for the iPhone to give a complete introduction to the Thai script. Reading Thai was designed upon seeing the need for an app that would cover not only the Thai alphabet, but also the complex rules of word formation. Reading Thai covers consonants, vowels, numbers, tone marks, punctuation marks, tone rules, letter combination rules, and multi-syllable words.
Reading Thai allows the user to become familiar with the 44 consonants that make up the Thai alphabet. They can learn the consonant class of each letter and the sounds it can make in different positions in a word. They also learn the full Thai name of the consonant with an English translation of its meaning, along with colorful images to illustrate. The Thai vowel symbols are also presented in pairs of short and long vowels. Variations in their written form are pointed out where appropriate. The user can likewise learn the Thai numerals and the tone and punctuation marks. For all of the letters and symbols presented in the app there is audio of its name or sound spoken by a native Thai speaker.
The tone rules, letter combination rules, and multi-syllable words sections of the app all contain many example words to demonstrate the rules of Thai pronunciation in actual use. Each word example includes the Thai script, a phonetic transcription, and audio by a native Thai speaker.
Reading Thai was recently featured by CNNGo in the article, “11 Blogs and Apps for Learning Thai”. The author, Greg Jorgensen, said of Reading Thai, This colorful app has everything beginners need to get the basics down…(it) nicely straddles the line between coming off as too child-like and too hard to get into.
Catherine Wentworth of Women Learning Thai said in her online review of Reading Thai, Genuinely useful, this app can operate as a learning tool, or to look something up when reading Thai. If you were limited to one Thai alphabet app for whatever reason, I would advise getting this app over the others.
