Red Umbrella Press has launched a new iPad app. It is a one hundred and forty-five page book for children, six to nine, although all ages are sure to find The Terribly Tall Tales of EnzoB: Born to Race a funny and touching story of inspiration.
Too short to show, EnzoB a rare dwarf pup threatens the reputation of generations of BeagleDom champions. With his dreams of being a show dog dashed, the little pup is banished from his forest home and sent to live in the city, as a pet to a friendly and loving couple, Mr. and Mrs. B. The story, written by Luscheyne Mellon, takes young readers through an interactive journey with the little pup, who does not let his short legs keep him from pursuing his dream to become the worlds first Formula One canine racer. In this his first adventure, EnzoB overcomes his obstacles and reminds kids that they can, too – you just have to believe!
All through the beagle’s tale of challenge and triumph, readers are part of the story. There is lots of interaction, such as a sing along, contending with jumping fleas or crazy cuckoos, a Tale Tracker bookmarker and more. The book promises to be full of happy, fun and tactile surprises.
Probably the first thing that strikes readers is the visual richness of The Terribly Tall Tales of EnzoB: Born to Race. All of the illustrations have been drawn and painted by hand by illustrator and designer, Steve Dixon. Each graphic helps bring the beautifully written story to life with its wholesome, organic look and feel.
Illustrations of the type gracing the pages of this iPad app, as well as the interactive elements, are exactly what Mellon was looking for when imagining the final product but she had to use some caution. “My original prose had been brought to life, although I was conscious of trying to strike a delicate balance so as to not distract my little readers from the story itself,” explained Mellon. “I chose to subtly infuse the narrative with some cinematic elements and a sprinkling of playful interactivity, too.”
Both the story and the illustrations were inspired by Mellon’s real-life, rare dwarf beagle, for whom the tale’s character is named. The book’s Tale Tracker bookmark is an artistic reproduction, created by Dixon, of the real Enzo’s tail.
