Squish The Zombies In Review – Crush Those Undead Half Wits!
It seems that all over the App Store (and TMA) zombie apps have risen once again. I apparently am not immune to this resurgence either as before me today, I have Squish The Zombies from AQSystem, who also happen to be the co-developers of Infect Them All (TMA review). With a name like that it doesn’t take braaaaaiiinsss! to figure out that this is going to be an amusing little app.
I’ve played and reviewed zombie apps in the past. Some great, some not so great. Personally, Squish the Zombies falls somewhere in between. Now for anyone familiar with Infect Them All (ITA), the overall design and graphics are going to feel quite familiar. Taking from their other popular title ITA, zombies make there second appearance here in Squish. Only this time instead of helping them, your goal is to eliminate them.
The gameplay is very simple. You control a snowball that starts at the top of a hill by using the iDevice’s built-in accelerometer. As you mow down zombies, you pick up points and the snowball gets larger and larger. If however you run into obstacles like houses, rocks, trees, etc. your “weapon” gets smaller and eventually disappears all together. To aid in your zombie destruction there is a power-up that turns your snowball into a steel ball of death. It certainly adds more fun to the game and hopefully future updates will see more zany power-ups.
Game types available are arcade and blitz. Arcade is the standard version that I have just mentioned – crush the zombies while avoiding other obstacles. In blitz mode it’s just you and the zombies (sans obstacles) as you try to rack up as many kills/points as you can in 60 seconds. Although both are good, I personally prefer the arcade mode as it is more challenging and can potentially last much longer.
Also included is the OpenFeint system, along with global leaderboards. Sadly, there are only 3 achievements to be earned. Again, hopefully they will address that in future updates and include several more to ramp up the replay value. While Squish the Zombies can use a few more power-ups and achievements to keep the crowd coming back for more, it’s still a fun and fast paced game. Regardless, if you’re a fan of zombie titles (and I know a lot of you are!), there’s every chance you’ll enjoy this one.
