I would consider myself to be a fairly big movie fan. I’m pretty much willing to go see anything. As a result I would also consider myself to be a fairly learned person when it comes to movie trivia. Usually this would only come in handy during portions of trivia games, not any longer though. The developers at Super Monko Studio have just what I need in their app Ultimate Movie Buff. A movie specific trivia game aimed at answering the pressing question “Are you a movie buff?”. Read on to find out how I did.
I’ve always thought that “trivia” apps are a risky venture in the App Store. They usually have a set number of questions and depending on how well thier programming is, the chances of repitition can increase which both lowers the fun and value of the app. I was surprised to see that you get almost 5000 different questions right off the bat, spread amongst 15 different categories. I said before that I was a fan of movies, but even I couldn’t come up with 15 different categories that you could ask questions about movies. Kudos to the developers for starting off with such a large number. As of now I still have not yet had a duplicate question, which to me speaks volumes.
I am really impressed by Ultimate Movie Buff’s design. It’s creative and eye catching. Questions are layed out in a way thats easy to read without getting boring or drab. I love the color choices and the use of shading and mixing tones. I know this is a little short compared to my usual speeches about design but that’s because it’s just simply a great design done well. As they often say, less is more.
The premise of Ultimate Movie Buff is simple. You start with a set amount of time and must answer various trivia questions relating to movies to increase/maintain that time as well as raising your score. Rather than just throw random multiple choice questions over and over though, they even incorporated images AND video. Definitely a lot of work went into this and it shows.
As far as game options go, you have 3 to choose from. Single player, head to head and turn based. The first is obvious, head to head has you and a friend fighting with the same device to see who can answer faster. Answers to questions are laid out on each side of the device and who ever is fastest gets the points. The last mode turn based, is also multiplayer but you just go back and forth with your opponent rather then at the same time. A great set of play options, however it would have been nice to see some sort of multiplayer/online mode. If you can do it with games like charadium I don’t see why you couldn’t do it here.
Another great feature of this game is the social integrations aspect. Trivia is one of those areas that friends will battle over all the time. The quest to find out who knows the most about “x” is probably one of my favorite quarrels with my friends. Having the ability to post to Facebook or Twitter aides me in that battle, and for that I am thankful.
If posting to your favorite social networks isn’t enough there is also a link that allows you to email your score to someone. After challenging all your friends, also be sure to check out how you sit in the hall of fame both globally and locally. All of this is as well as some instructions for the game are tucked neatly away in the options page.
As far as trivia games go, this one may be my favourite so far. If you are looking for a trivia style game and are as big a “Movie Buff” as I would like to think I am, then I think you will enjoy this app. I know I do. Hell, if you still don’t believe me at this point, check out their first movie trivia app just called Movie Buff. It’s in the appstore AND it’s free. Afterwards I’m sure you’ll take the leap and grab this version as well.
