Popular Headache Diary App is Free for National Headache Awareness Week
Bellaire, Texas – Help for millions of headache sufferers is as close as their phone. BetterQOL, the developers of iHeadache, a popular headache diary app for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad are giving away 10,000 free downloads beginning June 6. iHeadache is a comprehensive electronic headache diary that delves into a complete analysis of the headache. It classifies analyzes and tracks all facets of headache pain, including symptoms, triggers, disability and medications.
The medical community agrees that it is essential for patients to track the frequency of their headaches, medications taken and other pertinent details but keeping up with a paper journal can be cumbersome. Luckily neurologist Brian D. Loftus, MD and businesswoman Blakely Long teamed up and developed iHeadache.
The app has unique capabilities not available in other applications that track headaches. iHeadache creates custom reports for the patient’s doctor that can be used to pinpoint patterns and optimize the patient’s treatment plan. “This software was designed to captures data from the patient in order to generate reports specifically formatted for their physician,” explained Dr. Loftus, Chief Medical Officer of BetterQOL, Inc. “It’s the first step to optimized headache care.”
Until now iHeadache has been priced between $4.99 and $9.99. “Being able to offer iHeadache for free is an opportunity to do something positive for a huge group of Americans whose lives are impacted by their headaches.”, said Blakely Long, CEO of BetterQOL, Inc. “Our goal is for iHeadache available to everyone who can benefit from it and with our upcoming online version, even users without a Smartphone will be able to track their headaches.”
The free version of iHeadache will be available beginning June 6, just in time for National Headache Awareness Week (June 6- 12). The free app is currently only available in the US App Store.
Over 30 million Americans have migraine headaches and women are three times more likely to suffer from them than men. During the last three months more than 8 million people missed at least one day of work and more than 9 million missed a family or social engagement due to a migraine headache. These numbers don’t include individuals who suffer day after day with tension, cluster or other types of headaches.
The four stars plus app analyzes data entered using the International Headache Society criteria (IHS) to classify headaches as a migraine, probable migraine, tension headache or other unclassified headache. Information recorded, tracked and stored by iHeadache includes number of headaches, symptoms, duration, severity, disability, medication & usage and headache triggers.
Reports generated from iHeadache can be broken down into 7, 28 or 30 day periods or by specific months. Reports are formatted for physicians to quickly gather all relevant data needed to assess the treatment plan including the types of headaches the patient has, the number of headaches during a specified period of time, medications & doses taken, length of time the patient is disabled, their Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS) score, headache triggers, and notes entered by the patient. iHeadache helps patients and physicians to pinpoint patterns and determine if a headache is chronic. Medication tracking is also used to help a doctor decide if a patient is having rebound headaches from medication overuse.
iHeadache runs on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running OS 3.0 or later or a BlackBerry running OS 4.5 or later. Don’t have a BlackBerry, iPhone or iPod touch? iHeadache developers are already working on an online version of iHeadache that will be available in late 2010.
