When it comes to games designed for your iDevice, the “line-drawing” segment really is perfect for it. Games that involve simple taps and swipes make use of the device’s prominent features and if done well, can also result in a great game. Enter Super 7, a line-drawing title (with a math twist) brought to you by developers No Monkeys (makers of the fun Green Fingers and Alphabetic). So with expectations set, read on to see if 7 equals heaven, or if these devs were just monkeying around.
The concept behind Super 7 is simple. Draw lines to connect the numbered heptagons so that they total up to 7. The moment 2 or more collide and add up to the magic number (you guessed it…7), it’ll disappear off the screen and the score total will accumulate. You can have it total any number between -7 and 7 but anything lower or higher results in game over. To make things more interesting, special heptagons will pop up that give your numbers a 2x /3x multiplier effect or simply transform them into a 7.
It’s an extremely simple concept, but No Monkeys have ensured all levels of players will be challenged, as the game gets progressively harder after each successful creation of a 7. The design of Super 7 is surprisingly nice for something so simple. A smooth textured background with translucent text in the corners keeps all eyes center screen. The numbered heptagons come in a range of rich colors and they all look great.
For first time players, a small tutorial leads the way and then it’s off to the proverbial races. If you ever need a refresher course, help is available under the Info menu. You can also find tons of game related content there as well, such as high scores, stats and achievements. On top of that, the inclusion of Open Feint gives you in-game achievements as well as global high scores. So instead of just seeing how you stack up against your friends, now you can see how you compare with the rest of the world.
As it stands, this is probably one of the best examples of a true “pick up and play” title in the appstore. Not only is the gameplay addictive and easy to pick up, but with the great graphics and design (along with integration of OpenFeint), the replay value is definitely there. As much as I’d like to go on, that’s really all there is to say about the game. My review may be short but my praises are huge and I would recommend fans of both the pick-up-and-play and line-drawing genres to grab Super 7. The $0.99 price tag makes it a great bargain.
