The Hero in Review – My name is Mr. Superhero! Tights – mandatory!
Have you ever thought how great it would be to have super-powers? But, as they say, “with great power comes great responsibilityâ€. So it’s time to get off your *** and go get those bad guys. With Chillingo’s recent release, The Hero, follow the daily life of the flying and punching hunk of a superhero. Goofy police chief and busty reporter included! Feel free to discuss this review of The Hero in our forums.
The Hero is an original Action game. Take control of a superhero called (you guessed it) – Mr. Superhero and fight the evil Dr. Hubbub and his minions – including soldiers, zombies, aliens in ufo’s, robots, tanks and more! And at the end of the day you might even get a kiss from the lovely Miss Rose.
Playing The Hero is quite a different experience. For some reason, it reminded me a lot of  MiniSquadron (TMA Review) by MrFungFung. From mission to mission, you’re tasked with flying around different cities around the world to destroy a slew of baddies – and all the while high-fiving citizens leaning out of windows to keep your Fame meter charged. Yes, like any true superhero you are invincible but as we all know – image is everything. So make sure to catch those babies, quench those fires and DO try to avoid wrecking cars.
The methods of destruction are reminiscent of probably the most well-known hero of all time – Superman. Minus the eye-lasers though. Essentially, you fly around and hit enemies head on. You can also use boost (limited but replenishable) for that extra kick. As you progress along the story, you’ll unlock additional powers – like freeze, boom and zap that give you an extra edge when the going gets tough. The superpowers charge up as you gain fame and the best non-violent way to do this is high-five the civilians.
The enemies offer a nice variety that range from soldiers, zombies and ninjas to laser-firing satellites, giant metal snakes and UFOs. You will have to evade missiles, protect the city from giant meteorites and even save babies! Each enemy type requires a different tactic to defeat with the minimum of fuss. All of this makes for a nicely varied gameplay.
The graphics are excellent and while you may have to restart your iPhone 2G/3G to get a clean bootup, the performance is flawless on the older phones. There is a High FPS option in the game as well for the owners of the more advanced iDevices, though since I’m not a lucky owner of one I was unable to test it out. The controls offer both a D-Pad scheme and Tilt-control one, though it’s almost impossible to hit the enemies with the latter, especially on higher speeds. And even using the D-Pad, it’s rather hard to do so accurately at higher speeds. This could probably be solved by giving you better zoom on high speeds so you could actually see where you are going in overdrive.
The Hero is a gorgeous and innovative game that is one of the few titles that truly succeeds in feeling like a superhero. Everything else is just icing on the cake – the varied enemies and missions, polished gameplay, hilarious dialogues and, of course, the beautiful Miss Rose. Go get it – it’s worth every cent.
With this I declare The Hero officially touched!
