The Apple iPad Has Landed

WiFi Version

The world waited with bated breath as the man himself, Steve Jobs, unveiled the much-anticipated Apple tablet device years in the making, bestowing it with the name “iPad”. Boasting of a 1GHz Apple A4 custom-designed, high-performance, and low-power system-on-a-chip, the iPad holds itself out as the ultimate internet browser, email client, video, photo and eBook reader – with a specially designed iWork to provide word processing, presentation and spreadsheets.

The iPad weighs in at 1.5 pounds (1.6 for models with built-in 3G), and dimensions of half an inch thick, 7.47 inches wide and 9.56 inches tall. The device also boasts of a 10 hour battery life for surfing the Web, watching movies and listening to music. The device is WiFi ready, and for higher end models offer 3G access. The iPad also includes Bluetooth, a built-in mic and speaker, and a compass.

The iPad introduces the iBooks app, an eBook reader which goes hand in hand with the new iBookstore. iBookstore joins the ranks of iTunes Store and the App Store and provides digital content from major publishing houses such as McGraw Hill, Penguin, Barnes and Noble Nook, and Harper among others.

The 140,000 and growing list of apps on the App Store will likewise run on the iPad, although a software development kit is expected to be distributed to developers who will want to develop their apps specifically for the device.

As a bit of a surprise, The iPad is also cheaper than predicted, with the entry level 16GB device starting at $499 without 3G, and $629 with built-in 3G. The 32GB costs $599 without 3G and $729 with built-in 3G while the 64 GB device costs $699 without 3G and $829 with 3G.
