Connect 4 in Review – Go For The glory, Go For The Score!
EA has been on a roll lately. Thanks to an amazing partnership with Hasbro they have released iDevice versions of some of the most popular board games ever. Well, Connect 4, an absolute classic goes back for generations has gotten a little iDevice makeover.
EA titles are known for their visual appeal and eye candy. Connect 4 is no different. You are bombarded with bright and vibrant colours and great theme incorporation into every game aspect. Game pieces are part of every menu and help screen. Even the EA logo is a giant game piece. They did a great job incorporating the updated design that was released for the board game, even including the retail box in the game.
When it’s your turn, just drag your finger across the rows and release when the row you want is highlighted. The main point of Connect 4 is to get a row of 4 of your colour chips either horizontally, vertically or diagonally. If you want a more in-depth explanation, or a break down of how to play any of the game modes available there is an excellent help menu under options. Also, whenever you launch a game mode for the first time the instructions for that specific style of play pop up before the game starts.
Apart from original mode, you can play: Power Chips and Pop Out. In Power Chips, you get special game pieces periodically and instead of just trying to get a Connect 4, you play continuously for 3 minutes trying to get as many Connect 4’s as you can.
Also under the advanced modes menu are options for multiplayer modes as well as options to view your game play stats and any achievements you’ve reached. One of the nice things that they’ve done gameplay wise is that for all of the single player modes available, they also have a multiplayer mode as well. Using bluetooth, wifi or just sharing a single device you can play either the classic style or any of the other new gameplay styles.
Playing the game is just as easy and just as enjoyable as I remembered. Once again EA has done an amazing job in creating a version of the game for the iDevice that evokes memories of childhood and provides hours of enjoyment. Any fans of boardgames and/or almost anyone that grew up in the last 30 years will definitely enjoy this game. As they say “Go for it! Connect 4!”
