Since its grand opening, the AppStore has seen quite a number of Action/jRPG titles. Unfortunately, only a few are worth mentioning. Apart from Zenonia and more recently, Hybrid, only one other highly acclaimed title roamed App Store: the successful Chronicles of Inotia. So it’s no wonder Com2uS conjured up a sequel just in time for Christmas.
Inotia: A Wanderer o Luone (let’s just call Inotia 2) has taken the best from the original and expanded upon it. It follows the adventures of a young hero who was thrown into the midst of the war between good and evil. He is charged by the Knights of Light to protect the keys to the Evil Lord Gorgon’s prison. He must also defend himself from a rogue member of the order who wants to set Gorgon free. Tough job, but your’re up to the task.
Even at first glance it’s easy to see that Inotia 2 is not your regular iPhone game. It features 5 distinct classes to choose from, each with individual skills. Knight, Templar, Thief, Priest or Mage – choose whatever strikes your fancy. And don’t be shocked to see a Priest class in an iPhone Action/RPG! The trick is simple – as the game progresses you’ll be able to hire up to 2 party members to complement your skillset. Even though they will not have complete access to their respective class skills, you’ll have complete control over their equipment and skills.
As noted previously, the RPG element is quite deep in Inotia 2. By the way, when rolling the stats at the start of the game, have patience when creating your characters; you don’t get to manually upgrade later, so it’s wise to peg class stats as high as possible. Skills, on the other hand, are a different story. You get one skill point at each level up which you can spend on upgrading any of the 12 passive or active skills available.
Equipment-wise Inotia 2 is a munchkin’s paradise. Each character has 8 slots for various pieces from boots to jewelry. The backpack is limited though. You start with a 12 slot pack with 3 more packs available to be equipped (with 3 to 12 slots each). On the upside, quest items are stored separately and don’t take up valuable space. Additionally you can tweak the items by adding modifiers using graded ether or item enchantment scrolls. Be careful though, if you decide to use ether on previously enchanted item it will replace the modifier rather than adding on to it. In addition Com2uS added a crafting component to the game. Using recipes found in wild you can combine ingredients to produce stuff from potions to weapon upgrades to high-end items.
Inotia is immersive and balanced. If you follow the plotline, you should not encounter any troubles in overcoming your enemies. At the same time, it’s quite easy to wander in an area occupied by extremely powerful foes followed by your pitiable death. Pay attention to the colour of monster names; and if you see purple, run like hell. Another downside is the amount of kill-x-monsters and collect-y-parts missions are numerous. These go a long way to the total of 200+ quests in the game and serve to increase game time as well as level up your party. At the same time you can’t help but feel the developers could have been more imaginative.
Inotia 2 also has an online element. You can transfer your hero and his party to the server and continue your adventures there. It’s up to whether to fight in the online arena with other gamers from around the world for honour points and resources or explore dungeons populated with powerfully named monsters. The latter must be unlocked in single-player mode.
Since Inotia 1 had performance issues, I am surprised by how well its sequel (which looks fab) performs. You can choose between touch-interface and a virtual d-pad. Unfortunately, neither one is flawless. The touch interface has you tapping in order to move or attack. But since the figures are quite small it’s often quite hard to hit enemies especially when the screen gets crowded. Entering buildings is also a chore. The virtual pad allows you to change the target critter using a special button, but movement is awkward and uncomfortable.
The general issue for both modes is that the target isn’t automatically switched when the monster is slain and that for some reason it sometimes randomly resets altogether. But nevertheless, controls work well most of the time. Also because characters aren’t marked, it is often hard to differentiate them from their comrades.
Inotia: A Wanderer of Luone is a pure joy. Augmented by a solid storyline and loot hunting engine, this game is addictive. Mild control frustrations and useless mission elements aside, Inotia is an excellent blend of RPG and action game play. And after you’re bored by the slaying of countless, mindless creeps, you can duke it out online with real, living opponents. Warning: Don’t pick up Inotia 2 if you are on strict time lines at work or school – this addictive game will take precedence over any other commitment.
With that said, I declare Inotia: A Wanderer of Luone officially touched!
