Magnificent Gizmos & Gadgets in Review – Keep the wheels spinning!
When I was a kid I loved making gadgets. My parents got me a construction kit and I was able to create all kinds of crazy stuff. Some of it even worked! Well, Publisher X just made a construction kit for your very own iPhone! Just get the ball in the goal!
The goal of Magnificent Gizmos & Gadgets is deceptively simple. Just get the pink ball in the red box. Ha! You do this by utilizing various in-level devices and your very own gizmos & gadgets! The possibilities are endless!
The arsenal is as deceptively simple as the goal. You have a gizmo that rotates clockwise, a gizmo that rotates counter-clockwise, a gizmo that is very heavy, and a bunch of connectors. The rods are fixed and impassable by anything; the girders are fixed but passable and the ropes are flexible. One note though: for the gizmos to keep turning they must be connected to a rod or a girder. And it is using this arsenal you must achieve your goal!
As I said, the goal is to place the pink ball in the red box. Fortunately, it’s not necessary to keep there, just to have it completely inside for an instant. At the same time you can only build inside the green box. And what’s worse, on some levels the pink ball is outside the green area, forcing you to dream up really ingenious ways to move it to the goal.
A big part of the game is the interfacing with the various devices, placed on the map. They can range from fans and traction pads to pulleys with hooks, that allow your gizmos to play Tarzan. Achieving your goal is almost always dependant on the correct use of these devices.
The graphics are very nice with beautiful backgrounds and performance on my 3G is excellent. The music is also very nice, allowing you to relax and completely concentrate on the job at hand. The interface is above all praise, with all of the intuitive gestures fully supported. To ease the connection of rods and other stuff to the gizmos (which have 5 docking points) they are magnified when the connector is dragged to them. You can also move and delete the parts as you see fit.
The difficulty level is excellently balanced, with the first 10 levels (the easy ones) used like an excellent step-by-step tutorial to help you get acquainted with the game mechanics and elements. If you get really stuck, there are in-level hints to help you out. On the whole, there are 44 levels, which is not that much, considering the first dozen or so are intro ones. But on the other hand, the later levels are devilishly hard, forcing you to really crank your grey matter into overdrive.
I really like Magnificent Gizmos & Gadgets on the whole. It provides an excellent challenge if you’re looking for a brain twister. They could use a few more levels though the price tag of only $0.99 makes this a bit much to ask for. I would definitely recommend the game for any fans of Incredible Machines. And of course, the excellent difficulty progression makes it ideal even for newbies.
With this I declare Magnificent Gizmos & Gadgets officially touched!
