In the world of adventure games, few titles have left eternal marks as deep as 1994′s Beneath a Steel Sky. Revolution’s futuristic cyber punk game took players to a darkly humorous future where hacking and strange commercial intrigues leave society up-side down, quite literally. The futuristic point and click adventure is near perfect blend of grit and bright, shiny story telling. The rumour on the street is that this game will come to more than just the iDevice as Revolution Pocket (the unit responsible for its port) delves deeper into their past.
In 2008, Beneath a Steel Sky was given to its fans when its source code was released to the public by Revolution. You can now play it via Scummvm on any platform, but the official port of the game is supposed to bring quite a few goodies to the platform.
In the 15 years since its publication, adventure games have by and large, fallen away from their mainstay platform, the PC. There are many reasons for this, one of the largest being the focus on action games in the intervening years. The iPhone is a perfect spot for both new and old adventure games, as long as the interface can be wrestled to work well with a touch screen.
If Return to Mysterious Island is any indication of the potential that adventure games have on the platform, the iDevice could be a focal, resurrection point for a genre which many of us cut our teeth on. Judging by the popularity of our review and by Tetraedge’s walkthrough, it already has slotted into that position.
