Good news for China, Apple, and iPhone customers in China – mixed news for America, Canada, Japan, and every country that are slaved to one carrier. According to CNN, an Apple Spokesperson admitted that, the China Unicom agreement “is not an exclusive deal”. What that means for Apple is huge: China has the largest mobile phones market in the world, the largest customer bass and a competitive system. While the China Unicom is China’s 2nd largest carrier, flexibility to cater to other companies, such as the nation’s largests carrier, China Mobile for instance, mean that much bigger piece of the pie.
Apple have not admitted which other companies they are in talks with or hinted at when the other companies would be able to provide service to the iPhone. Certainly not a bleak outlook – any hint that non-exclusive deals will pop up are good hints, both for customers and presumably, for Apple. When the iPhone breaks its exclusive AT&T deal next year in the USA, there will be much rejoicing.
