AutoStitch in Review – Create panoramic photos on your iPhone

AutoStitch, developed by Cloudburst Research, is an iPhone app that allows you to stitch multiple images together to create seamless panoramic photos quickly and easily. Just how well does such a tool perform on a mobile device? Read on to find out.

App Description
AutoStitch makes wide-angle photography a reality on the iPhone, allowing multiple images to be combined into a seamless panoramic mosaic. No user input is required other than selecting the photos to be combined. Harness the power of this award-winning stitching technology for the first time ever on a mobile device.

AutoStitch is the only app that can stitch images in any order or arrangement, with both horizontal and vertical motion in the same stitch. With state-of-the-art algorithms that automatically recognize overlapping images, AutoStitch makes capturing great panoramas easy, fast, and fun.

  • Simple and intuitive interface. Just select images and touch “Stitch”
  • Advanced blending algorithms combine your images with no visible seams
  • Stitch any number from 2 to 20 or more images
  • Crop the result to any desired region with automatic or manual cropping
  • Use your existing camera app to take the photos

Getting started

The first thing you need to do before creating your panoramic image, is take a series of photos that will make up the final panoramic, and this is all done using the iPhone’s camera. You can take as many or as few photos as you like in either portrait or landscape mode, with the only recommendation from the developer, is to allow for a 30% overlap between each photo.

Creating your panoramic

Having taken the photos that will form your panoramic, simply launch the app and select the photos from your photo album, tapping each photo to select it. You will then notice that in the lower part of the screen each photo will load one at a time until all are loaded and ready to be stitched together.

When all the photos have loaded you will notice the “Stitch” button becomes active, and a tap on this button will begin the following panoramic creation process. First off you will see “Extracting Features” followed by “Aligning Images”, then “Rendering Panorama” and finally “Done”.

When the whole process is complete you can either save the images as it is rendered, or you can choose to use the apps auto-crop (manual crop also available) feature that works very well. After you have finished, simply hitting save in the top right hand corner of the screen will prompt you to “Save to Photo Album”. That’s all there is to it and you now have your beautiful panoramic.

So what do we think of AutoStitch?

AutoStitch is by far the easiest and best app for creating seamless panoramic images on the iPhone, and for this reason it gets 5 stars out of 5. If you’re in the market for such a photo app, Cloudburst Research’s AutoStitch is highly recommended.
