Railroad Madness in Review – Choo Choo Choose This App

The “Traffic Management” style of casual games is growing at a pretty steady pace at the App Store (e.g. Flight Control, Harbour Master). They are really enjoyable games that are simple to pick up and fun to play. The latest one to hit my plate was developer Floor 84 Games’ Railroad Madness.

In Railroad Madness you play the role of switch operator. It’s your job to make sure that all the trains make it to their pre designated areas at the bottom. To do so you, tap arrows (or switches) to change the direction of the trains as they pass through. There are 2 types of trains –  Cargo and Passenger. At the bottom are 4 exit tracks (2 per side/type of train). Your goal is to make sure that the correct trains are exiting on the correct tracks. If a train exits on the wrong tracks you lose a point/life. On top of making sure they exit where they are supposed to, you also have to make sure that the trains don’t end up colliding on the tracks. If 2 trains end up colliding, it’s game over instantly.

If you’re new to the traffic management type of game, they included a small tutorial section that includes a few tips on gameplay. Although Railroad Madness is pretty straightforward, if you are new to the genre or just haven’t played in awhile, it always helps.

There’s also a stats section available from the main screen. Here you will see your top score, your number of safe arrivals, the highest number of trains you had on screen at one point, total time played and your rank.

To get your rank tap the online scores button at the bottom of the stats page and you will be prompted to create an account/login. After you do that you’ll be able to compare your scores with everyone around the world.

Overall the game was quite fun. Visually it’s very appealing and has definite replay value. My only real issue with the game is the lack of variety during gameplay. Personally I’d like to see the amount of train types increase as you progress to the more difficult levels. Another way you could change it up is to introduce some new track layouts. Currently regardless of what level you are on, the track design is always the same. Adding different designs/layouts to the track could add a whole new dynamic to the game.
