AirCoaster 3D in Review – Roller-coaster of Love

aircoaster3d_1Love it or hate it, AirCoaster 3D (Formerly known as AirCoaster Online) is a popular App. It is currently at number 42 on the top 100 list of paid Apps. It also is pretty even in reviews between people who love it and people who hate it. So, what is this App that seems to create division between the happy people (sarcasm) of the AppStore?

aircoaster3d_2AirCoaster 3D was a random Coaster generator. You were able to set some parameters of the track you desired and ride it in a first person view. All without leaving the comfort of your living room. It was like a new and amazing journey each time… and that was it. Nothing more, nothing less.

While this may be impressive as a computer screensaver, as an App, a lot felt missing. It would be tough to justify the need or desire for an app like this. With the version 2.0 upgrade, things changed for the better, and I believe this upgrade definitely enhances this App from fancy screensaver status to bona fide legit entertainment.

aircoaster3d_3This upgrade brought in the most cried for ability; making your own tracks. While some may have varying opinions about the track editor, I have found it easy to use. I’ve been able to create some enjoyable tracks. Not only that, but there is also a community page. If you have access to the internet, you can upload your own tracks and check out others. Downloading them is a breeze.

Among some of the more interesting downloads are the Dow Jones track, Trash Can, and Rock N” Rollaroaster Touch. While downloading and making your own tracks is cool, you can still randomly create new tracks.

aircoaster3d_4This adds a huge layer of enjoyment to the game because it allows for one thing that was lacking in the previous version, control. The ability to control your coaster’s destiny, the ability to control your experience by saving tracks and reliving them over and over again is no small improvement.

You can also ride your coaster in 11 different background environments. In the midst of riding the coster, swiping left or right on the screen will allow you to look in this direction. You can also choose to ride the conventional way or suspended from the top.

aircoaster3d_5With one major update under the developer’s belt, there is the promise of more.  As of right now, there is one confirmed update for April 8th. This will include things such as fixing stability issues, the ability to look up and down, changing your field of view at any time, and the ability to bank at 90 degree turns. A future update promises a “Real 3D” mode. You will be able to use your old school red/green 3D glasses. That is something I’m looking forward to.

All in all, if you’re looking for a nice quick diversion, if you’re looking for some quick (and legal) entertainment, AirCoaster 3D is steal for $0.99. There are so many crApps out there, but this is not one of them. AirCoaster 3D is a good example of what can come out of that amorphous category known as Entertainment.

  • I’ve been on the fence about picking up AirCoaster 3D for a while now. It’s only a $1 and I buy a lot of apps for a buck, but I just haven’t gotten around to it. Of course when I was first looking to get it, it hadn’t had the track editor in it. I am a huge fan of games like RollerCoaster Tycoon and Theme Park which both allow you to edit coasters.

Having the ability to share your builds with others is similar to LittleBigPlanet for the PS3. I love that community aspect of the game. This could lead to never ending replayability.

    Outstanding! Thank you Young!
