Zombieville USA chomps into App Store, $2.99 + Impressions

zombieville_usa2Zombie fans rejoice. Mika Mobile’s first App Store release will have you roasting, maiming, beheading and blowing up zombies in this uniquely animated (reminiscent of Alien Hominid) zombie game.

When your town is overrun by the walking dead, there’s only one thing left to do – go through their pockets and look for loose change! As the lone survivor of a zombie apocalypse, it’s up to you to battle legions of the undead in a never ending fight for survival! How long can you hold out? Scrounge for cash and ammunition, and buy up to 15 upgradeable weapons as your inevitable doom closes in around you…

Zombieville USA is a simple to play yet hard to master survival “horror”, where there’s more to player strategy than meets the eye. Unlike dozens of other arcade zombie titles, careful resource management does play a vital role in your quest to fend off hungry zombies.

zombieville_usa1With only four buttons needed to play the game, players will find it extremely easy to jump right in and start blasting away. To move left and right in this side-scrolling world, simply tap the corresponding arrow buttons on the screen. To fire your weapon, tap anywhere in the area between the arrows. To cycle through all available weapons, pressing the ammo icon (top left) will do the trick .

An important aspect of the game is earning enough money to buy much needed weapon upgrades. Zombies do get stronger and faster as the game progresses, so it would be wise to constantly add new weapons of mass (zombie) destruction to your arsenal. Money can be found by either killing zombies or entering homes that are littered throughout a level. Houses not only give you extra coin and ammo, but it also allows you evade incoming zombies and conserve some ammo.

Oh... Yeah....

Zombieville USA may look like a walk in the park, but it is in fact anything but. Players will need to ensure that they kill enough zombies per level (thus making more money) just to be able to afford those shiny new guns. While this maybe the case, killing off too many will deplete your ammo in no time and makes advancing to later stages much more difficult. Striking a balance between making more money and finishing levels with bare minimum kills really adds another layer to the gameplay.

Don't mess with the rocket launcher

Zombieville certainly has all the ingredients for an App Store hit. Once you get the hang of the controls, blowing up zombies with an array of weapons is a blast (pistols, machine guns, shotguns, grenade launchers and melee weapons).

There are a couple of things I would like to see improve on in the next update:

  • Fix the occasional lagging issue.
  • Make the area for firing weapons larger and more responsive.
  • Give the player an option for continuing a game. You basically have to start the game from level 1 when you die.

If you’re like me and love action packed zombies games, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t pick up a copy of Zombieville USA. There’s lots of fun to be had and loads of well animated blood n’ guts. Sweet…

Zombieville USA now available for $2.99. For a video of the game in action, check out it out here.
